No fewer than four actors and directors directly involved with the project refused to participate or offered large bribes to be let off. William Wyler, who had been given a vacation with all expenses paid, returned to Goldwyn $25,000 advanced to him in salary and expense money to be let off directing it. Of note, the famed Gregg Toland, was Woman Chases Man (1937)'s cinematographer. Toland was in the midst of his tragically short career, beginning in 1926. Two years later, he would win an Oscar for Wuthering Heights (1939). From 1936 to 1942, he was nominated four times for an Oscar, winning an Oscar for William Wyler's "Wuthering Heights." He was innovative -devising a tool which silenced the camera's noise and allowed the camera to move about more freely. He was the first cinematographer to receive prominent billing in the opening credits. His trademark became a method known as "deep focus" cinematography, showing background objects as clearly as foreground objects. Toland's career was cut short in 1948 by his untimely death of coronary thrombosis at age 44. Among other credits, he was known for Citizen Kane (1941), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) and The Grapes of Wrath (1940).
