Bing Crosby was originally slated to be the solo singer for "The Song of the Dawn." However, he was arrested for drunk driving shortly before shooting, and John Boles was hastily substituted.
The dancer in the African drum number is Jacques Cartier, who was white. He's wearing a back lacquer he devised when he did a similar dance in the 1927 Broadway production of "Golden Dawn." The lacquer was devised specifically to reflect the bright lights. The dance was inspired by Ted Shawn's exotic modern dance numbers.
