Although there is a five-year gap in the narrative, the ladies' clothes / hats are in the same late 1920s / early 1930s fashions throughout. This is particularly noticeable with Kay Francis.
The two-cent stamp on the letter would not have been enough to have it forwarded from San Francisco to London, so it would have been returned to sender. It would have cost five cents by ship, and ten cents by air.
