The history of the film was almost as cursed as the characters in the story. Harry Baur's wife died. The crew got sick, with director Julien Duvivier coming down with typhoid. The production relocated to indoor sets at the Epinay studio in France, which caught on fire. Finally, when the movie premiered later in New York, the print itself burned.
