Although Carole Lombard and Clark Gable later became one of Hollywood's most famous couples, they were completely indifferent to one another during the making of this film. It was not until several years later that they met again and fell in love and got married. This was Gable and Lombard's only film together.
Miriam Hopkins was initially slated to star in this film but was replaced by Carole Lombard, who was not a big star at the time, before shooting began. Hopkins pulled out of the picture after refusing to accept second billing to Clark Gable.
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard first met on the set of this film. At the time Lombard was married to William Powell and was very much in love with him. Gable was married to Rita Langham (a.k.a. Maria Franklin Gable), 17 years his senior, a relationship that last until March 1939.
