Although author Johnny Gruelle originally presented Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy as sister and brother in his books, they are depicted as sweethearts in this film.
The trio of doctors and the Rag Doll Hospital are believed to have inspired elements from the infamous 1980s Raggedy Ann Broadway musical.
This film and The Raven (1942) hold the distinction of being the only non-"Popeye the Sailor" two-reel shorts from the Fleischer studios.
Animator Charles Thorson intentionally patterned his character designs after those from the Walt Disney short Broken Toys (1935).
This was intended to be the first film in a series, but the Fleischer brothers' studio was taken over by Paramount the following year. After undergoing a redesign, Raggedy Ann went on to make two more appearances (without Andy) in the Paramount Noveltoons shorts Suddenly It's Spring (1944) and The Enchanted Square (1947).
