What studios are willing to bid to win the newest Tarantino movie is staggering: an upfront agreement to a $100 million production budget, first-dollar returns, and final cut. At a time when even $35 million for an original action film like “Baby Driver” is considered a gamble, this is unprecedented.
The reason is self evident: What Tarantino can do is otherwise missing from American filmmaking. He only directs his own scripts and has never made a sequel, but his films are global events. Tarantino remains one of the only directors whose original films can rake in two-to-one foreign-to-domestic box office returns.

Still, the studios’ dog-and-pony shows are odd. So many people associated with Harvey Weinstein were victims of his abuse, tainted by their association with the apparent serial rapist, or left in the wreckage at 99 Hudson Street.

Stanley Kubrick’s contribution to great cinema of the 1970s offers his vision of what an epic should be. Transported by images that recall great paintings of the period, and Kubrick’s new approaches to low-light cinematography, we witness a rogue’s progress through troubled times. And even Ryan O’Neal is good!

‘Things Blowing Up Good’ has been surefire entertainment since the beginning of cinema, but this ill-fated Cinerama extravaganza about the biggest explosion in recorded human history limps along despite some pretty darned impressive volcanic effects. It’s quite an entertaining spectacle, with various good performers in three soap opera plots, either overacting or loitering about with nothing to do. And don’t forget the from-left-field musical striptease.

Horror fans attending what was advertised as a "Hatchet 10th Anniversary Celebration" at the ArcLight Hollywood theater received quite the shock when filmmaker Adam Green took to the stage and revealed that the movie they were actually about to watch was a new film in the franchise called Victor Crowley, which was filmed in secret and features Kane Hodder reprising his role as the slayer of Honey Island Swamp, and now Bloody Disgusting has revealed the first teaser trailer for the film.
The new teaser trailer for Victor Crowley (see below) sees the return of Parry Shen as Andrew Yong, the (supposedly) sole survivor of the Honey Island Swamp massacres, who inevitably must face the monster that he managed to escape, Victor Crowley.

Not so fast Savant — with the help of correspondent input, DVD Savant presents more information on David Swift’s adaptation of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying — correcting and modifying some assumptions in my first review. Don’t worry — it’s good reading.
A Savant article
This is an odd circumstance. I routinely update, modify, correct and de-stupidify DVD Savant reviews, but this time I’m taking a more radical step. In my March 25 coverage of Twilight Time’s Blu-ray of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, I made a big point of the fact that David Swift’s film adaptation had not made many changes. Several songs were dropped, but that would seem the right thing to do considering that the movie wasn’t planned as a Road Show — it’s only 121 minutes in duration and has no break for an intermission. Today in 1994, Passion opened at the Longacre Theatre, where it ran for 97 performances. Passion is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine. The story was adapted from Ettore Scola's film Passione d'Amore. Passion is notable for being one of the few projects that Stephen Sondheim himself conceived, along with Sweeney Todd and Road Show. Set in 19th century Italy, the plot concerns a young soldier and the changes in him brought about by the obsessive love of Fosca, his Colonel's homely, ailing cousin.

Did Quentin Tarantino stumble this time out? His tale of western killers sharing a snowbound cabin builds almost zero suspense, and the verbal excess and violent grossness lack Tarantino's usual clever, wickedly funny edge.

Dan Harmon is a contradiction. He is happy and sad, loving and cruel, appreciative and narcissistic – but above all, he is bitingly honest. This trait is what makes him a great writer and a compelling documentary subject. After getting fired from Community (the show he created), Harmon began the podcast, “Harmontown,” which became his form of therapy in the wake of this latest rejection. Hamontown follows Harmon, along with his co-host Jeff B. Davis, Dungeon Master Spencer Crittenden and his girlfriend Erin McGathy, as they take “Harmontown” on the road. Harmon is also faced with writing two new pilots, one for CBS and one for Fox, which become “homework” he is constantly working on (or not working on) while on the road. Director Neil Berkeley asks Harmon at the beginning of Harmontown what he learned while on tour and the rest of the documentary works to try and answer this question. Berkeley...

It’s tough to say goodbye to Sid Caesar. I’ve been pondering what I can possibly say about a comedy legend who has been around as long as I can remember and contributed so much to comedy, mostly on television but also many times in motion pictures.
Firstly Sid Caesar was in on the ground floor of television, his earliest programs done live in 1949 before the video switch board had even been invented. In those earliest shows the director was on the stage telling the floor managers which cameras and mikes to hook or unhook to the coax and audio cables! Consider that just for a moment!
Caesar’s wonderful book Caesar’s Hours: My Life in Comedy, with Love and Laughter, co written with Eddie Friedfeld tells all about Sid Caesar’s years in show business and the legendary live variety shows; Your Show of Shows...

Tribeca Film has acquired Bryan Poyser's "Love & Air Sex," previously titled "The Bounceback," which premiered last March at the SXSW Film Festival. The company plans to release the film on February 4 on VOD followed by a theatrical release on February 7. The Austin-based SXSW hit will kick-off a special event: a 10-City Air Sex Road Show Competition. According to a release from the company, Air Sex is "basically Air Guitar meets karaoke, plus perversion-miming to music. Contestants get on stage and act out a wild sexual scenario to a song of their choosing, completely alone and (usually) completely clothed. Yes, it's a thing." The Road Show commences in New York on the same date as the theatrical release, February 7th, and will feature some of the key actors in the film. Read Indiewire's review from SXSW here.

Hear our thoughts as we discuss the film and the future of DC and Warner Bros. after WB Movie President Jeff Robinov, a key figure in the forming of DC Entertainment, steps down from his post.

Audiences today often don't know the name of a play until just before its run starts. But would you book a ticket for a show without a title?
With a new play, audiences never quite know what they're getting, but early ticket-buyers for Anthony Neilson's latest piece at the Royal Court were taking an exceptionally wild shot in the dark. Originally advertised several months ago as "Untitled New Play by Anthony Neilson", it was only revealed to be called Narrative on 15 March, three weeks before opening.
Neilson's play joins a very small sub-set of theatre productions that have been delivered onto the posters unbaptised. The other most recent British example was Mike Leigh's 2011 show at the National theatre, promoted and sold for several months as "New play by Mike Leigh", before, at the last minute, becoming Grief.
In both cases, the delay resulted not from indecision or wilfulness...

It's hard to feel charitable towards Richard Curtis's malaria drama. There was more bite in Simon Cowell's dog's dinner

Drama in aid of a worthy cause is not always more a pleasure than a duty, and Richard Curtis's feature-length Mary and Martha – an early curtain-raiser for Red Nose Day – was no exception. If its aim was to draw attention to the thousands of African children who die needlessly each year from malaria, all I can say is, it felt like it. I hope that doesn't sound too uncharitable. But I would have been as happy with a decent documentary as with this glossy weepie about two mums – one American, one English – having the bad luck to have a beloved son bitten to death by a mosquito in Mozambique and then...

The mighty and all-powerful Chicago Underground Film Festival has done the absolute unthinkable: Reached their 20th year of operation! How many underground festivals have accomplished that feat? None, until now! Well, “now” being March 6-10 at the fest’s new location: The Logan Theatre.
Obviously, there are a lot of people who have worked with the fest over the years to help make it last for exactly two fantastic decades, but, truly, there is one special person who has to be specially lauded for his tireless dedication to the advancement of underground film and its makers. Especially because Cuff hasn’t just been around for 20 years: It’s been fucking awesome for 20 years.
That person, of course, is Artistic Director Bryan Wendorf, who has been with the fest for the very first edition to it’s most recent, mind-blowing one. Year after year, Wendorf has guided Cuff into defining, challenging,...

The battle between jocks and art freaks wages on this week, as Ovation, the only television network devoted entirely to visual and performing arts, announced that it will no longer be available to Time Warner subscribers, in part due to the cable giant's decision to favor more sports-related content.
Ovation released the news today, outlining Time Warner Cable's plans to drop the arts-heavy programming at the end of its current contract. The network added its own interpretation of the contract expiration, claiming that TWC is continuing to invest in significant amounts of sports content while allowing the carriage agreement with Ovation to run out.
According to The Wall Street Journal, TWC has confirmed its decision to cut its ties with Ovation starting December 31st, 2012, citing the network's recent underperformance and limited arts programming.

Updated: This seems to be what Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt was talking about this month when he threatened to drop some channels as a way to control costs. The cable company has informed Ovation that it will be dumped at the end of the year, when its contract expires. “Ovation is among the poorest performing networks, and is viewed by less than 1% of our customers on any given day,” the No. 2 cable operator says. “We’ve paid more than $10 million in carriage fees to Ovation over the past several years. They’ve had ample opportunity to improve the ratings and the content, and have failed to deliver.” It adds that Ovation’s not as arts-oriented as it claims: “One 7-day period in November 2012 shows that 70% of their schedule was old movies that are repeated, numerous repeats of the PBS show Antique Road Show, Infomercials that are unrelated to the arts,...

Just what TV needs -- another singing competition! AMC is getting into the televised talent search business with a new reality series called "Road Show," but naturally it's got a twist.
Instead of a nationwide casting call for talent, the series will actually revolve around eight separate small-town talent shows and the hilarity that ensues when regular folks show off their talent. "Road Show" will visit eight cities to look for singers, dancers, comedians, jugglers and more for an "America's Got Talent"-style variety show, selected by the show's director and choreographer (who are also the judges and mentors).
In the end, the four acts who make the cut will perform at the local talent show, where the audience picks the winner.
Additionally, AMC has renewed reality series "Small Town Security" for another season. Both small-town-focused shows will premiere next summer.
