Taylor Swift brought out surprise guest (and former Eras Tour opening act) Sabrina Carpenter during the Surprise Songs portion of her New Orleans concert on Saturday night.
“I think tonight I’m going to do something different, I’m gonna sing a song that’s not mine but it’s someone that I really love so I’m going to see how loudly you can sing the song,” Swift told the audience. “It’s been stuck in my head, and it would make feel good if I knew 65,000 other people...

Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter performed a surprise duet during the first Eras Tour show in Sydney!
Sabrina is serving as the opening act for Taylor‘s international shows right now, but her set at the Sydney show on Friday (February 22) was canceled due to weather. A weather delay caused the show’s start time to be pushed back and there unfortunately wasn’t enough time for both artists to perform their sets.
During the acoustic section of the show, Taylor brought out Sabrina to sit at the piano and sing a duet with her. They did a mashup of “White Horse” and “Coney Island.”

Taylor Swift braved a bit of rain, waited out a little lightning, and brought out Sabrina Carpenter for a special surprise song mash-up during night one of her Eras Tour run in Sydney, Australia.
Because of the weather delay, Carpenter was forced to forfeit her opening set to make up for lost time. As a consolation, Swift welcomed her on stage during the surprise song portion of the setlist, where they started with a duet of Swift’s early hit “White Horse” before deftly weaving it together with the Evermore favorite “Coney Island.

Taylor Swift has jumped from country to pop, and now she also has a rock hit to her name. “The Alcott,” her collaboration with The National, just debuted on the Billboard Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, marking her first appearance on the list.
“The Alcott” debuted at No. 45 on the chart with 636,000 rock radio audience impressions, Billboard reports. While it signifies Swift’s first appearance on the Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, it’s the sixth appearance for The National, whose album First Two Pages of Frankenstein houses the song.
Swift has appeared on other rock-adjacent charts in the past. She’s been featured on Adult Alternative Airplay four times thanks to songs like “Exile,” which featured Bon Iver, “Coney Island,” another collaboration with The National, and “Snow on the Beach,” which featured vocals from Lana Del Rey.
“The Alcott” isn’t the only Swift track on the Billboard charts right now.

Emmy-winning music supervisor Robin Urdang doesn’t like saying no to “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino. With the show’s music steeped in American standards, 1950s and ’60s tunes to reflect the era, Urdang found herself going down rabbit holes to find masters and license songs. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” starring Rachel Brosnahan, features a mixture of well-known and obscure songs. In turn, the show’s Season 4 soundtrack is filled with both known and rare gems. For “I’m Nobody’s Baby,” by nightclub legend Miss Beverly Shaw, Urdang searched for an heir — a quest that led her to Shaw’s relative. “We needed to master [the song], but there was no recording,” she says. “So, [her family] sent us the vinyl and we got it mastered.”
Here, Urdang shares the stories behind some of her favorite needle drops from the show.

Why Taylor Swift Fans Think "coney island" Is About Harry Styles, Calvin Harris and More A-List Exes
Fans can't shake this theory about one of Taylor Swift's new songs. Less than a week ago on Dec. 11, the singer blessed devoted Swifties with the surprise sister album to folklore, titled evermore. Ever since dropping her ninth studio album, fans have left no lyric undissected, including what sound like very carefully chosen words for the track, "coney island." More broadly, the song juggles themes of loss, regret and nostalgia, but with a closer look—or should we say, listen—some Swifties have theorized the song references many of the star's A-list exes, from John Mayer to Calvin Harris, all within just a few verses. To start, with the...

In July Taylor Swift released a surprise album, “Folklore,” and less than five months later she has come out with a surprise companion album, “Evermore,” which dropped on December 11. Is it as good as its predecessor? Less than 12 hours after its release, music fans in our forums have already devoured it, some of them multiple times. And they have opinions. Scroll down to read some of their comments, and join the discussion here.
Swift explained the quick release of more new music on social media, saying, “We just couldn’t stop writing songs. To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the ‘Folklorian’ woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in.”

Taylor Swift surprised fans with a social media announcement this morning that she will release new album Evermore tonight at midnight Et, along with a video for new song “Willow.” Swift tweeted that she will log on to YouTube for the midnight premiere to answer questions about the album, which she described as a “sister” album to her recently released folklore.

A24’s “The Disaster Artist” and “Lady Bird” led the pack of specialized successes, again landing in the weekend’s Top 10 chart. Both had to hold off the usual pre-holiday dip as well as the massive draw across all audiences for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
A total of eight recent limited releases expanded this weekend –all their theaters combined add up to about the same number of theaters as “The Last Jedi,” but it grossed 22 times as much as the $10-million total of those eight films combined.
To a large extent grosses this week are gravy on top of past totals and more importantly a build-up to the most lucrative time of the year for adult moviegoing. That starts in earnest on Christmas Day. More viable titles are competing than most years, and not all will be optimally available. But distributors hope to regain their momentum with the return...

Woody Allen’s latest is a disappointment, but even a lower-drawer Woody like Wonder Wheel, which is anchored by a quartet of outstanding lead performances, is worth a look. Set around 1950, Wonder Wheel tells the story of 26-year old Carolina (Juno Temple), on the run from her mobster husband and his crew after ratting them out. She takes refuge at the home of her estranged father Humpty (Jim Belushi) and his second wife Genny (Kate Winslet). They live with Genny’s young son Richie (Jack Gore), a budding arsonist, in a cramped apartment on the grounds of the Coney Island Amusement Park that quakes beneath the titular Ferris Wheel (shades of Alvy’s childhood in Annie Hall). Carolina’s unexpected appearance could not have come at a worse time. Genny and Humpty were at one time a pair of alcoholics that found each other when they were at a low point,...

Chicago – Woody Allen emptied out his junk drawer of discarded script ideas and somehow managed to convince Kate Winslet to star in it. That’s the gist of the latest “serious Woody” entry in the Oscar winner’s long running career. Woody Allen has had some timeless triumphs, but lately he’s been more about quantity than quality.
Rating: 1.0/5.0
“Wonder Wheel” has all the hallmarks of Woody’s style over six decades in cinema… the 1950’s setting, the Tin Pan Alley jazz score, the references to theater and analysis, but in this film nothing fits. It has the aura of a man trying to keep up his one picture a year pace, but is at a loss for a real idea. Justin Timberlake is a budding playwright working as a lifeguard on Coney Island in Brooklyn. He serves as the film’s narrator, and occasionally talks directly to the camera.

In years past, Lgbt cinephiles counted themselves lucky for one decent movie with a queer storyline. Looking at the depth and breadth of Lgbt films to come out in 2017, it’s clear that “Moonlight” was just a harbinger of great things to come for queer cinema. With growing social acceptance comes increased funding for movies with queer themes, support for Lgbt-identified filmmakers, and less stigma around straight actors playing gay. This year brought a breakthrough performance from transgender actress Daniela Vega, saw A-lister Emma Stone play lesbian icon Billie Jean King, and a strong Oscar contender in Luca Guadagnino’s sumptuous “Call Me By Your Name.”

The hits keep on coming. Both “The Disaster Artist” (A24) and “The Shape of Water” (Fox Searchlight) opened strong, despite the usual strong-fall off in post-Thanksgiving audiences. Last year the month of November saw only one specialized release, “Manchester By the Sea,” pull an opening platform per theater average over $60,000. This year has already seen five.
“The Disaster Artist” (in 11 markets) showed the best performance in New York/Los Angeles of any title this year (nearly $120,000 per theater), besting last weekend’s numbers for “Call Me By Your Name” (Sony Pictures Classics). They join other Oscar-bound strong openers including “Lady Bird” (A24) and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (Fox Searchlight).
This marks unprecedented strength over such a short period, with “Lady Bird” and “Three Billboards” already performing well in wider release. At some point exhibitors are going to be challenged to handle so many hits (all will not go wide...

“I suppose you get used to all this noise?” “No. I never get used to it. I hate it!” That’s not Woody Allen responding to the relentless din of the media probing into his personal life and questioning just how much of a degenerate he is. Not directly, anyhow. No, that’s Kate Winslet’s rundown character responding to what it’s like to live in an apartment directly above bustling 1950s Coney Island. All day every day, it’s an unending cacophony of roaring roller-coaster crowds, noisy kids, rides, bells, the pair of bays it straddles, and the incessant target shooting. Little does she know, in these early minutes, that she’s the bullseye. Winslet plays Ginny, a dejected waitress married to an older abusive alcoholic boor (Jim Belushi,...

Woody Allen seems increasingly haunted by the Tennessee Williams play “A Streetcar Named Desire.” The basic situation of that Williams classic was reused for Allen’s “Blue Jasmine,” which won Cate Blanchett an Oscar, and it is repurposed again (but somewhat transposed) for “Wonder Wheel,” a film about a frustrated woman in 1950s Coney Island named Ginny (Kate Winslet). Allen was often at his best in earlier films when he dealt with the character of a failed creative person, like Dianne Wiest’s Holly in “Hannah and Her Sisters,” but his sympathy for people like that has dried up over time.

Kate Winslet Was ‘Profoundly Irritated’ By Her Complicated Character in Woody Allen’s ‘Wonder Wheel’
Stories of actors’ challenges are a trope, whether it’s tales about the physical demands of a tough shoot, or the responsibility of playing a real-life figure. But for Kate Winslet, her latest role came with a different kind of problem: She really didn’t like her character.
“I think I had to accept quite early on, that I was going to feel profoundly irritated by Ginny, all of the time,” Winslet said. “And, also, that I had to stay the right side of the line with her.”
Set on Coney Island in the 1950’s, Woody Allen’s “Wonder Wheel” follows Winslet’s Ginny, a perennially disappointed housewife who sees an opportunity to change her fortunes when she falls for a handsome local lifeguard (Justin Timberlake). It’s a questionable choice from the start, one made even more complicated by the sudden arrival of her stepdaughter Carolina (Juno Temple), who...

Kate Winslet is on fire in Woody Allen's Wonder Wheel, playing Ginny, an unhappily married waitress living near the boardwalk on Brooklyn's Coney Island circa 1950. This broken dreamer is pushing 40 and reaching the limits of her patience with Humpty (a solidly affecting Jim Belushi), the carousel-operator she married to provide a semblance of security for her pre-teen, budding-pyromaniac son Richie (Jack Gore), a budding pyromaniac. The Wonder Wheel outside their window spins in circles – just like Ginny, who drinks too much and lashes out at anyone who doesn't like it.

One of the best and most fascinating aspects of Mr. Robot season 2 was Tyrell Wellick’s very conspicuous absence.
The simple absence of a lead character is such an underutilised yet powerful tool in the TV showrunner’s tool belt. Our brains crave patterns and consistency and when a pattern is broken is such a severe way like a lead actor suddenly disappearing, those same brains can’t help but mistake a simple absence for importance.
Sam Esmail was so bold as to tell Martin Wallstrom, a professional actor presumably under contract, “don’t worry so much about this season.

Wednesday’s Mr. Robot left me feeling more confused than Elliot after one of his Mr. Robot spells. Did I really just watch an hour of Tyrell Wellick growing a beard and chopping firewood?
If you were dying to know where the chilly E Corp executive disappeared to last season — and I wasn’t, really — you get your answer here, as a series of flashbacks fill in the blanks on Tyrell’s backstory. We start back on the night of the original Five/Nine hack, with Tyrell and...

Feeling like a poor stage-to-screen adaptation in the lineage of Rent or The Producers — just without catchy songs to redeem it — Wonder Wheel is an undercooked offering from Woody Allen. Justin Timberlake plays Mickey Rubin, a fit lifeguard in a one-piece bathing suit. As is painfully clear in the opening scenes, if you’re going to cast one of the biggest pop stars in the world, at least use him for what he’s good at.
Timberlake begins the film with narration about his time at Nyu and burgeoning writing career. He does his best Allen impression, over-enunciating every word, but the character isn’t your typical, neurotic Allen surrogate. Allen instead writes the neurosis into Ginny, Kate Winslet’s character, a desperate housewife who is cheating on her husband, Humpty (Jim Belushi), with Mickey. Lacking the neurotic charm that made Jesse Eisenberg’s Cafe Society turn so endearing, Timberlake struggles with delivery here,...

Count Kate Winslet in as an Oscar contender as once again Woody Allen delivers the goods for his Wonder Wheel leading actress. Observed in a vacuum, “Wonder Wheel” is a kaleidoscope of lights and delights with best-in-class cinematography, perfect casting and impeccable period detail. Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro lovingly lights actors’ faces with stained-glass-window colors. Kate Winslet has rarely been better in a part that lets her talent unfurl and bloom in new ways, and Jim Belushi is great as her character’s schlubby, unsatisfying husband. Its setting in 1950s Coney Island allows costume designer Suzy Benzinger room to play, with dresses that elicit gasps of pleasure.

“Wonder Wheel” opens with Mickey (Justin Timberlake), a wannabe playwright and current Coney Island lifeguard, staring at the camera and making an excuse on Woody Allen’s behalf: “I relish melodrama and larger-than-life characters,” he says. There are a lot of those in this lush ‘50s romance, one of the more confident Allen pictures of late, but Kate Winslet looms above them all.
As Ginny, a failed actress-turned-clam-bar-waitress yearning for something more, Winslet delivers her most powerful, emotionally resonant performance in more than a decade. Though inevitable comparisons to Cate Blanchett’s fiery turn in Allen’s “Blue Jasmine” hold water, Winslet delivers a softer, melancholic woman, with cinematographer Vittorio Storaro’s lush, expressionistic camerawork complimenting her poetic anguish. She transforms a bumbling alcoholic caricature who exudes bleak jokes about missed opportunities, injecting her with majestic sadness.
The rest is nothing we haven’t seen before, but it’s nevertheless...

Just a few short hours ago, the New York Film Festival wrapped up its 2017 slate with the Closing Night Selection, Woody Allen’s latest film, the Coney Island set Wonder Wheel. In many ways, this is a coming home for the legendary filmmaker, while also managing to do something a bit different than usual. Eschewing his normal Cannes Film Festival bow before a summer release, Allen took this flick to Nyff, with a winter awards season release to come at the end of the year. He does have a contender on his hands, but perhaps not in the way we initially thought. Read on for more… The movie is a period piece set in Brooklyn’s historic Coney Island during the 1950’s. Lifeguard Mickey Rubin (Justin Timberlake) narrates this story of passion on the boardwalk. Carousel operator Humpy (James Belushi) and his rather beleaguered wife Ginny (Kate Winslet), eke out...

Soon to turn 82 -- 82!!! -- Woody Allen continues his annual run of films with Wonder Wheel. Ready to debut at the New York Film Festival on Saturday, October 14, Wonder Wheel's description goes like this: "On Coney Island in the 1950s, a lifeguard tells the story of a middle-aged carousel operator and his beleaguered wife." A new trailer has been released and appears to reveal Jim Belushi as Humpty, the carousel operator, and Kate Winslet as Ginny, his beleaguered wife. Belushi was surprisingly bearable in David Lynch's Twin Peaks: The Return, but the trailer makes it clear that Winslet is the star, with Juno Temple as a young woman who brings trouble, and Justin Timberlake as a lifeguard, who looks like a Justin...

It’s no secret that these days we get one new Woody Allen movie a year. The thing is, usually it’s been a summer release, piggybacking off of a debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Sometimes in this modern era, they become Oscar winners, like Blue Jasmine, Midnight in Paris, or Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Other times, they become unfairly ignored gems, like Cafe Society. Still other times, they appear like “lesser” Allen works. This year, however, things are a little bit different. This time around with Wonder Wheel, Allen and Amazon Studios skipped Cannes, will instead be the Closing Night Selection at the New York Film Festival, and will instead have a December release, right in the heart of awards season. A Trailer dropped today to showcase why Amazon is so bullish on it. You can see it below, but first…a bit of discussion. Plot wise, I’ll...
