Featured review
A subtle and effective interpretation of Ivar Lo-Johansson's classic novel. The transfer from novel to film works really well. One of the first Swedish attempts to make a modern film in an authentic social realistic context. This film has probably pioneered a new genre in Swedish film. A genre that since then has been the main Scandinavian topic. The young Barbro Kollberg creates an inspired and courageous portrayal of Marta, fleeing a poor and dismal existence in the country for the big city. Her opponent, Sture Lagerwall, represents the old school of acting, with a clear theatrical diction even though he is supposed to be a farmer's son. Stockholm plays another crucial part in the film "Kungsgatan". Beautiful and richly exhibited, day or night.
