Fourteen of these prison ships, also called "hell ships" were sunk by submarines or by air attacks. Most of these ships also carried military cargoes and Japanese troops and were not marked as carrying Allied POWs or captured civilians - thousands of whom lost their lives from 1942 to 1945 aboard these vessels.
