The first feature film to be released by Walt Disney animation was, as most know, David Hand's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" in 1937. Walt Disney himself, of course, had been working in animation for over 15 years at that point, having founded Laugh-o-Gram Studios in 1921. It was at that studio where Disney developed his taste for well-worn fairy tales, making shorts based on "Little Red Riding Hood," "Jack and the Beanstalk," "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," "Cinderella," and "Alice in Wonderland." That last film provided fodder for a long series of Alice Comedies that launched Walt Disney Production in 1923. The first 56 films made by Disney were Alice Comedies before he shifted to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, making dozens for him as well. In 1928, he debuted Mickey Mouse, and the rest is history.

Disney fans and physical media collectors, rejoice! This November will see the release of a gargantuan 100-film Blu-ray collection called the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection. The catch? It’ll cost you $1,499.96.

The boxed set officially releases on Nov. 14, but preorders are currently available exclusively at Walmart’s website.

The Walt Disney Company is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a hefty new Blu-ray box set containing 100 of its best animated films.

Officially titled the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, the box set comes with three volumes that open up to feature the original theatrical artwork for each film. Additionally, the package offers digital codes to all 100 movies, a certificate of authenticity, a lithograph from the upcoming feature Wish, and a collectible set of crystal Mickey Mouse ears engraved with “Disney 100.”

Since the Writers Guild of American and Screen Actors Guild are both still on strike, this year's Destination D23 convention down in Orlando, Florida didn't really have much of anything to showcase. Disney just announced the release of the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, featuring 100 animated films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. It’s packaged together as a three-volume set that unfolds into your own storybook.

The set is festooned with original poster designs and comes with digital codes for every movie, alongside a lithograph from Disney’s upcoming feature “Wish,” a certificate of authenticity and crystal Mickey Mouse ears engraved with the “Disney 100” logo. Disney’s acclaimed VR short, “Myth: A Frozen Tale,” a bedtime story about the elemental spirits from “Frozen 2,” launches February 26 on Disney+ in 2D. While not as immersive in 2D, the short still captivates as a gaze into the mysterious and moody forest outside Arendelle (narrated by Evan Rachel Wood’s Queen Queen Iduna). Director Jeff Gipson, who made Disney’s first VR short, “Cycles,” was inspired by his own family tradition of telling bedtime stories, particularly his great-great-great-great grandfather’s brush with Jesse James as a youth growing up in Kansas City.

Gipson tapped that sense of excitement and wonder of hearing about his ancestor swapping horses with the James gang, and applied it to the mythology of the forest characters: the Nokk stallion water spirit, the massive earth giants, the Bruni salamander fire spirit, and the swirling wind. “And I also wanted to draw from the history of [Disney],” he said,...

From the animated fairy tales to literary adaptations and more, Disney is responsible for a lot of memories and magic! But which classic movies are truly the best, and which ones are a little disappointing when we look back on them? We've ranked them to find out.

Since there are a lot of Disney movies, we've laid out some ground rules to make this a little easier. We're talking about "classic" Disney movies, so we've limited ourselves to movies from the classic era through the Disney "renaissance" period - aka films made before the year 2000. Milton Quon, an animator who worked on “Fantasia” and “Dumbo,” died of natural causes at his home in Torrance, Ca., on June 18. He was 105.

His son, artist Mike Quon, told Variety that his father was drawing up until his last days. He also acted in movies including “Speed,” “Chill Factor,” “Sweet Jane,” “The Cat Killers” and the TV series “NYPD Blue” in addition to working as a Disney publicity executive. He described his “Speed” character in a 2005 interview as the “token Asian on the bus.”

Mike Quon said his father maintained a sense of humor throughout his life. When asked about the secret to his longevity, he would reply, “A good wife and Chinese food.”

Quon was born in Los Angeles as the eldest of eight children and the only son of immigrants from Canton, China. He was encouraged by an uncle to pursue a career in art, before receiving...

"Fantasia" wasn't a huge hit when it was first released 75 years ago (on November 13, 1940).

Since then, however, over the course of multiple re-releases, the Disney feature has earned a reputation as a masterpiece for its blend of lushly recorded classical music and dazzling Technicolor animation. It eventually became a huge success in both theaters and on home video and spawned several sequels and spinoffs, not to mention parodies by other studios.

Still, as many times as you've enjoyed the ballet-dancing hippos or Mickey Mouse's botched attempt at using magic to shirk drudgery, there's a lot you may not know about "Fantasia." Read on, and watch out for those magic mushrooms.

Patty Andrews, who has died aged 94, was the lead singer and soloist with the Andrews Sisters. The swinging American trio, comprising Patty and her older siblings, Laverne and Maxene, achieved their greatest success in the 1940s, contributing to the war effort with catchy songs including Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me) and, with Bing Crosby, Don't Fence Me In.

The Andrews Sisters performed at military bases and raised money for war bonds; their hits were sung by the troops and by women working in factories. Just days before the release of "Tangled," Disney shocked the world by announcing the film would be their last fairy tale princess story. But while there was much wailing, another, more positive milestone has been somewhat overlooked: "Tangled" marked the studio's 50th animated feature.

Most formats take a while to come into their own. Who can remember the first horrible DVDs? The first discs were defined by a paucity of special features, with most blurbs proudly boasting “Scene Access” and “Interactive Menus” as the carrot for you to give us those old VHS tapes. Then there was the packaging itself which came, depending on the studio, in a variety of horrible designs (the cardboard ones proffered by Warner Brothers stand out as especially awful in my memory). Disney were likewise slow to live up to recognise the potential of the new format, with the studio’s first releases – which, as it happens, included Alice in Wonderland – resolutely vanilla. Though you always sensed the marketing wing was holding back the good stuff for the fourth or fifth re-issue a couple of years down the line.

Veteran animator who contributed to every aspect of Disney's output for 42 years

When the veteran animator Bill Justice, who has died aged 97, applied for a job at the Disney studio in 1937, it was on the basis of a 30-day "try-out"; he remained there for the next 42 years, contributing to every facet of Disney's output, from feature films and short cartoons to TV shows and theme park attractions.

Justice was born in Dayton, Ohio, and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he attended the John Herron Art Institute (now a school of Indiana University) to study portrait painting. In 1937, in the midst of the Great Depression, he responded to a Disney recruiting advertisement in Esquire magazine and gave up the weekly income of $65 he was then earning in order to work at Hollywood's most famous cartoon studio, for $12 a week. He began as an "in-betweener" on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs...

Watching every Disney feature animation ever made wouldn't take a month of Sundays, it would take a year of Sundays, and here's your chance. That's right: to mark the release of the 50th Disney feature, Tangled, the BFI is playing every one of its 49 predecessors – including Bambi, Snow White and Pinocchio – chronologically, every weekend throughout 2011. By the end, you should never again want for the sight of a talking woodland animal, a silver-throated princess, a homicidal stepmother or a dated example of politically incorrect stereotyping. Beyond the all-time classics, there are some intriguing obscurities – anyone remember Make Mine Music, a jazz answer to Fantasia? – while Tangled, a snappy, Pixar-ish spin on Rapunzel, proves there's life in the 74-year-old formula yet. There'll be a preview of it this Sunday to kick off the season, and its directors host a Q&A at the IMAX later this month.

A few days ago, we put up the press release for the announcement that Disney are going to be showing every single one of their animated feature films at the BFI during the course of 2011. This is to celebrate the fact that their new movie, Tangled is their 50th feature release. To coincide with this, Disney have also brought out a brand new trailer showing all 50 of their animated features and if you love Disney movies, then you’ll really love this!

At some point in the chronology of me dealing with Tangled, a complicated psychological rollercoaster for this lifelong Rapunzel lover, I had completely forgotten (or maybe never known?) that it was to be the 50th Disney animated feature.

I think I wasn't counting the compilation films but Disney does. Here's a helpful reminder from Disney of that rich history (which I saw courtesy of All Things Fangirl). How many have you seen?

The ones I've seen are in bold. Some I haven't seen so childhood so I dare not "rank" them though it's tempting to imagine watching them all chronologically and doing so... I just need a free 300 hours or so to watch and write up. Easy.
