‘Only Murders in the Building’ Trailer: Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez Sleuth for Hulu
Steve Martin and Martin Short have been making comedy magic together for decades, from “Three Amigos” to “Father of the Bride” and their Netflix special “Steve Martin and Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life.” Now the longtime pals have a new project in the works with “Only Murders in the Building,” a comedy-mystery limited series heading to Hulu this summer. The series is the duo’s first narrative scripted project together in years. Selena Gomez also stars in the series.
“Only Murders in the Building” follows three strangers “who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. When a grisly death occurs inside their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, the trio suspects murder and employs their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth. As they record a podcast of their own to document the case,...

Moviegoers had better get in touch with their senses — Sony’s new thriller “Don’t Breathe” is about to leave them in the dark. Fede Alvarez, director of the 2013 “Evil Dead” reboot, returns with a tense and terrifying conceit: Three strangers who are down on their luck in a dodgy neighborhood get wind that there is a wealthy old recluse living in the area — and he’s “blind as a bat.” The group break into and enter his home one night looking for cash — until the homeowner turns the tables on them, to chilling effects. There was a definite sadness on Sunday, the third day of Noir City Austin, as I made my way to the seat at Alamo Drafthouse Ritz that I had occupied all weekend. The film festival was coming to a close and my trip to Noir City was almost over. The crowd had shrunk, but those who remained were hungrier than ever for more Cornell Woolrich adaptations.
Night Has a Thousand Eyes
The first selection of the day featured another standout performance by Edward G. Robinson, an actor I always tend to typecast, yet am continuously surprised by his strong range and characterizations. In Night Has a Thousand Eyes (1948), Robinson plays John Triton, a phony psychic who one day realizes he has developed actual powers. As his ability to predict accidents and deaths grows stronger, his newfound gift becomes a curse, which starts to eat away at him.

Joan Lorring, 1945 Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee, dead at 88: One of the earliest surviving Academy Award nominees in the acting categories, Lorring was best known for holding her own against Bette Davis in ‘The Corn Is Green’ (photo: Joan Lorring in ‘Three Strangers’) Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nominee Joan Lorring, who stole the 1945 film version of The Corn Is Green from none other than Warner Bros. reigning queen Bette Davis, died Friday, May 30, 2014, in the New York City suburb of Sleepy Hollow. So far, online obits haven’t mentioned the cause of death. Lorring, one of the earliest surviving Oscar nominees in the acting categories, was 88. Directed by Irving Rapper, who had also handled one of Bette Davis’ biggest hits, the 1942 sudsy soap opera Now, Voyager, Warners’ The Corn Is Green was a decent if uninspired film version of Emlyn Williams’ semi-autobiographical 1938 hit play about an English schoolteacher,...

The third drifter is John Root who has caused the gossip mill to run into overdrive taking residence with young Danni Anderson and her adolescent brother Mitch. Australia’s Revelation Perth International Film Festival will be holding it’s explosive 15th annual edition on July 5-15 with one of it’s most jam-packed lineups yet.
One of the most special events that Revelation will be holding is July 14‘s retrospective of the films of Jeff Keen, the pioneering British underground filmmaker who very sadly just passed away on June 21. Keen’s work has been having a major resurgence lately and Revelation is the latest organization to so boldly feature his breathtaking experimental film work, from classics like 1967′s Marvo Movie to modern films like Artwar (1993) and Joy Thru Film (2000). This is absolutely an event not to be missed.
Another staggering event this year is a very special live presentation of Crispin Hellion Glover‘s notorious underground films What Is It? and It Is Fine! Everything Is Fine. (Click film titles for Bad Lit reviews!) These very...

Ever heard of a comic that uses real-life celebrities as the inspiration for its characters? That's exactly what you'll find in Alan Robert's Killogy, an off-the-wall, genre-busting mash-up of crime, dark comedy, and horror that throws three murderers into one prison cell together.
Written and illustrated by Robert (an accomplished horror comic creator, writer, illustrator, and musician), this original, four-issue mini-series kicks off in October 2012 from award-winning comics publisher Idw Publishing. Robert, creator of the hit series Crawl to Me and bassist for Life of Agony, based his characters on the likenesses of celebrities Frank Vincent (Goodfellas, Raging Bull, "The Sopranos"), Marky Ramone (formerly of The Ramones), and Brea Grant ("Heroes", "Dexter"). He explains, "I had specific ideas on what these characters should look like, and I’d constantly find myself comparing them to the stars we ended up approaching. I thought it would be a complete long shot to get them involved,...

I’ve been following Jack Heller’s “Enter Nowhere” since it was announced back in 2010. There’s a reason for that: I love this type of movie. You know, get a group of people in an isolated locale and watch the shenanigans ensue. (“Evil Dead”, “The Cabin in the Woods”, etc.) Haven’t heard much from the film since the news that Lionsgate had acquired it back in 2011. Turns out, Lionsgate will be sending the film straight to DVD and VOD on April 3rd, 2012. They’re not even going to bother with a Blu-ray release, apparently. In a press release, we’re told that the DVD will include a behind-the-scenes featurette. Yay? In any case, a trailer for the film exists, and you can take a gander at it below. The DVD will feature a behind-the-scenes featurette. You'll find a large look at the box art and a trailer inside.

Billing itself (with more than a little justification, too) as "the world's most popular film noir festival," Noir City opens today in San Francisco and runs through January 29. The star of this tenth edition, as Matt Sussman notes in his overview for the Bay Guardian, will be "Angie Dickinson, who will be feted and interviewed in person at a double bill of two of her best: The Killers (1964) and Point Blank (1967). Whereas Ava Gardner simmered her way through Robert Siodmak's 1946 adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's short story, the temperature of Dickinson's Killers mob girl is harder to take in Don Siegel's remarkably brutal remake: a Monroe in harsher lines with nothing of the little girl lost about her. So too in Point Blank — which re-teams Dickinson with her Killers costar Lee Marvin — does she put up a good fight, even as she brandishes her sexuality like a semi-automatic.

In this incarnation of our Videolog column (which began in 1982 with VHS and Betamax and later laserdisc), Starlog posts information usually on Tuesdays regarding selected genre titles being released (or re-released) now on DVD and Blu-ray. Prices listed are Msrp, though the clickable links lead to Amazon where the savings can be significant.
DVD Releases for September 8, 2009:
Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Very First Alvin Show & Alvin And The Chipmunks: Go To The Movies: Star Wreck (Paramount, $16.99): Two Alvin DVDs hit video shelves. The Very First Alvin Show is, well, the very first Alvin show from the 1961 animated series that started it all. It has never been released on DVD or VHS before, and it’s accompanied by two additional episodes, “Rockin Through the Decades” and “A Chipmunk Reunion.” The same-priced Star Wreck is, of course, a Star Trek parody with Alvin as Captain Dirk, commander of the S.
