When Sam Riley first got the script for John Cranko, he saw the title page, with its big black print, and thought: ‘An action movie! Finally, someone has seen my action potential!” Then he googled John Cranko. It wasn’t quite what he expected. Not an action here but “a chain-smoking gay choreographer” who transformed the world of ballet.
Riley — known for his breakout performance as Joy Division singer Ian Curtis in Anton Corbijn’s Control (2007) as well as turns alongside Helen Mirren and Andrea Riseborough in Rowan Joffe’s gothic take on Brighton Rock (2010) and across Lilly James in Ben Wheatley’s Rebecca (2020) — had never even been to the ballet. But he asked his wife, Downfall and Rush star Alexandra Maria Lara, to read the script. “She told me, ‘this one you’re gonna do. This is definitely a job to do’….this is the sort of role that comes along,...

Rereleased for its 50th anniversary, this ultraviolent urban pastoral remains thrilling, sensual, dangerous and effortlessly fluent
Sin and shame are the driving forces of Martin Scorsese’s blistering early classic from 1973, now on rerelease for its 50th anniversary; it is an ultraviolent urban pastoral boiling up from the streets of Little Italy in Lower Manhattan around the time of the annual San Gennaro feast. It’s a thrillingly sensual, dangerous, effortlessly fluent movie which reaches back to the Warner Brothers’ gangster films, but also to Fellini’s I Vitelloni (1953), Godard’s Breathless (1960) and even the Boulting brothers’ Brighton Rock (1948). One year before, Francis Ford Coppola had released his sensational mob drama The Godfather, the great top-down grand political narrative of organised crime. Mean Streets is a great example of the opposite tradition: the ordinary worm’s-eye-view of the mafia, which was to lead to Scorsese’s GoodFellas and David Chase’s The Sopranos,...

This lesser-known suspense thriller is an excellent adaptation of a novel by Graham Greene, and a fine showcase for actor Anthony Hopkins and the upcoming Kristin Scott Thomas, with an able assist from Derek Jacobi. A Paris lawyer is sentenced to die as a random hostage of the German occupiers, but swaps with another prisoner with a desperate, questionable death-cell contract. Three years later, he must pretend not to be himself when he returns to the house he traded for his life, to face a woman who has sworn to kill the man who allowed her brother to die. Fans of Hannibal Lecter will be impressed by Hopkins’ deep, absorbing performance — the show’s moral tension and strange twists of fate are quite moving.

What makes film noir so fascinating? There are a lot of components that come into play with noir films, but cynicism, suspenseful music, a mysterious plot, figures lurking in the shadows, femme fatales, and fedora-wearing detectives are some of the staples of the classics.
Film noir, or “dark cinema,” was first coined by a French film critic in 1946 to describe the downtrodden themes in American movies. Although the term wasn’t widely adopted by American directors until years later, the ’40s and ’50s are regarded as a classic era that produced pioneering noirs such as “The Maltese Falcon” and “Double Indemnity.”

In his latest podcast/interview, host and screenwriter Stuart Wright talks to writer Nick Triplow about his new book Getting Carter: Ted Lewis and the Birth of Brit Noir, which is out now from No Exit Press: https://www.noexit.co.uk/index1.php?imprint=1&isbn=&ebookid=1689
The story of Ted Lewis carries historical and cultural resonances for our own troubled times. Get Carter are two words to bring a smile of fond recollection to all British film lovers of a certain age. The cinema classic was based on a book called Jack’s Return Home, and many commentators agree contemporary British crime writing began with that novel. The influence of both book and film is strong to this day, reflected in the work of David Peace, Jake Arnott and a host of contemporary crime & noir authors. But what of the man who wrote this seminal work? Ted Lewis is...

Six Minutes To Midnight director Andy Goddard with Anne-Katrin Titze on Eddie Izzard and Bexhill-on-Sea: “Eddie used to go there as a child. I think it was a nice close to the circle to film there.”
Earlier in our conversation, Andy Goddard mentioned John Boulting’s Brighton Rock (starring Richard Attenborough), Alberto Cavalcanti’s Went The Day Well?, and Robert Donat’s performance in Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps as references for his historical thriller Six Minutes To Midnight (co-written with Eddie Izzard and Celyn Jones). He also pointed out the innocence reflected in Lionel Jeffries’ The Railway Children and Peter Weir’s Dead Poets Society. Here the director notes the impact of the countryside of England, with its sunshine and long shadows, shot by Chris Seager, and the production design by Candida Otton.

“Psycho Scarface”
By Raymond Benson
While we in the United States think of the “gangster film” as something that is perhaps distinctly American, it can be forgotten that other countries have had their fair share of mobsters, too. The U.K. is a typical specimen. There have been some very bad hombres in movies like Sexy Beast and The Long Good Friday, which are classic examples of British gangster cinema.
It was a pleasant surprise to discover Brighton Rock, obviously a beloved crime movie in Britain, but not as well known in the States. In fact, the movie was released in America as Young Scarface. This thriller, made in 1947 and released very early in 1948, is a product by the Boulting Brothers (identical twins!), who were a sort of British Coen Brothers at the time. They produced numerous quality movies from the late 1930s to the 1970s,...

Graham Greene’s tense crime tale is as important as his classic The Third Man but nowhere near as well known. Down Brighton way the race-track boys have sharp ways of solving disputes and terrorizing the common folk — think ‘straight razor.’ Richard Attenborough’s breakthrough film is also a showcase for Hermoine Baddelely and a marvelous newcomer that every horror fan loves even if they don’t know her name, Carol Marsh. Kino’s disc has a Tim Lucas commentary; this review balances thoughts about mercy and damnation, with an extra insight about a piece of ‘stick candy’ unfamiliar to us Yanks.

Retitled from The Honorary Consul and sold in America with one of Paramount’s sleaziest ad campaigns, John MacKenzie and Christopher Hampton’s adaptation of a Graham Greene novel features a fine Michael Caine performance, but prefers to stress sex scenes between star Richard Gere and Elpidia Carrillo. Tom Hardy turns in a fearsome dual performance as the Kray twins in Legend. Here's Ryan's review of an excellent gangster movie...
With a constant sense of impending violence, writer-director Brian Helgeland's Legend cuts to the core of life as a gangster: accepting this particular line of work requires not just a capacity to maim and steal, but also to deal with the ever-present possibility of a knife in the back.
Tom Hardy is on top form as the Kray twins - the most famous gangsters in 1960s London. At first, we’re led to believe that they collectively represent the light and dark of an ordinary person: Reggie's tough yet suave and witty, Ron unhinged and monstrous. We soon learn that they’re actually far more similar in temperament than their outward appearances imply.

In Memoriam. pic.twitter.com/5jL7Sh9Hpr. Colin Trevorrow (@colintrevorrow) August 25, 2014 This weekend we lost the legendary Lord Richard Attenborough, and even today his loss is still felt. The tremendous actor/director of such films as The Great Escape, The Sand Pebbles, Brighton Rock, Gandhi and Chaplin left a full life and a grand legacy behind, which has mostly been highlighted by his work in Steven Spielberg's 1993 masterpiece Jurassic Park. Now while Attenborough did have an enormous legacy before his role as the eccentric John Hammond, it is that role that most modern audiences identify him with. A role that is being paid tribute by friends, colleagues, and even those who did not get to work with him, but continue his legacy tangentially. Case in point is Colin Trevorrow's tweet from last night, showcasing what can be assumed to be a memorial to John Hammond in the...

I heard the news last night, but after my sixth ten hour shift in a row at my day job, my sleep addled brain couldn't, or just downright refused, to process the information. But now, with a healthy amount of sleep backing me up, it hit me like a freight train: Richard Attenborough, five days before his 91st birthday, has passed away. The world of cinema has lost another legend. And that is exactly what Richard Attenborough was. A legend. No matter what aspect he tried his hand at, he added so much to the cinematic landscape. It was in the last years of his teens, that he made the jump from the stage to the screen with an uncredited role 1942's In Which We Serve. It would be five years later that Brighton Rock would deliver his breakthrough role as psychotic hoodlum Pinkie Brown. After over twenty years in front of the camera,...

We pay our respects to Richard Attenborough, the legendary British actor, director and producer.
Each generation will have their own memories of the late Richard Attenborough. Beloved actor, director and humanitarian Richard Attenborough died this week at the age of 90. Given his incredible fame and critical reputation, it.s no surprise tributes are popping up all over the Internet. What.s interesting about these moments in the sun for Attenborough, however, is how few of them are focusing on Jurassic Park, or mentioning it as a throwaway in the ninth paragraph. We don.t get to choose our legacies. In fact, our legacies don.t always make logical sense. Richard Attenborough was an incredible director. He churned out more than a handful of great films including Gandhi and Chaplin. He also lent his superb acting talents to dozens of great older films like The Great Escape, Brighton Rock, And Then There Were None and 10 Rillington Place. Yet, it.s Jurassic Park that an entire generation of fans will remember him for. And you know what, that...

We know them best as the twelve very different incarnations of the Doctor. But all the actors who've been the star of Doctor Who, being such good all-rounders in the first place, have also had film careers. Admittedly, some CVs are more impressive than others, but this retrospective attempts to pick out some of the many worthwhile films which have starred, featured or seen a fleeting cameo by the actors who would become (or had been) the Doctor.
William Hartnell was, above all else, a film star. He is by far the most prolific film actor of the main twelve to play the Time Lord. With over 70 films to his name, summarising Hartnell's film career is difficult at best.

Even back when Britain was an industrial nation, films about industry were relatively rare: audiences who worked on assembly lines presumably wanted to look at something more glamorous on their night at the pictures. In Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960), Albert Finney snarled, "Don't let the bastards grind you down," a neat encapsulation of the working man's political philosophy, whereas I'm Alright Jack (1959) took a dismayed view of the hostile stand-off between Capital and Labor. That Boulting Brothers satire may have adopted a "plague on both your houses" stance, but in fact its sympathy was with management.
The Agitator (1945) is the product of a gentler age: it tries to be sympathetic to everybody, but again there's a hidden conservative bias. Still, as the product of a generation who had just won the war and were looking forward, some of them, to a bright socialist future of free education and health care,...

Cinematographer on the first Star Wars film who worked with the Boulting Brothers, Hitchcock and Polanski
The British cinematographer Gilbert Taylor, who has died aged 99, was best known for his camerawork on the first Star Wars movie (1977). Though its special effects and set designs somewhat stole his thunder, it was Taylor who set the visual tone of George Lucas's six-part space opera.
"I wanted to give it a unique visual style that would distinguish it from other films in the science-fiction genre," Taylor declared. "I wanted Star Wars to have clarity because I don't think space is out of focus … I thought the look of the film should be absolutely clean … But George [Lucas] saw it differently … For example, he asked to set up one shot on the robots with a 300mm camera lens and the sand and sky of the Tunisian desert just meshed together. Influential and respected cinematographer Gilbert Taylor, whose career encompassed the likes of Dr. Strangelove, Star Wars and A Hard Day’s Night, has died at the age of 99.Though he might be best remembered by fans for working on George Lucas’ original space fantasy, his career was long and fascinating, and saw him work with many of the world’s most respected directors. Born in Bushey Heath in 1914, he got his break into the film industry in 1929 at London’s Gainsborough Studios, where he began working as a camera assistant. While his career was interrupted by military service during World War II, he still managed to find a creative outlet, filming nighttime raids over Germany for the Royal Air Force.Among the films he worked on either as Camera Assisstant or Cinematographer are such notable titles as Brighton Rock, The Outsider, Ice Cold In Alex, Repulsion, Cul-de-sac, Frenzy and Flash Gordon.

In the 1940s and 50s, the Boulting brothers won over filmgoers and critics with a series of classics – from Brighton Rock to Private's Progress. As the BFI begins a retrospective, Michael Newton explores their version of Britain
The history of the Boulting brothers is the history of British cinema in miniature. The brilliance, the comforts and the disappointments are all there. In the 1940s, they take off from documentary realism to reach the heights of noir extravagance, before falling back into a gently unexciting worthiness. At the start of the 1950s they produce two fascinating oddities, characteristic of the oddity of the times. Later that decade, they turn to cosily satirical farce, the products of an exasperated, grump. The 1960s see them trying to get with it and making a middle-aged effort to "swing", but also creating one work that finds a vulnerable, extraordinary beauty in ordinary lives. And after that comes a petering out,...

Sir Ben Kingsley and Lord Puttnam among those to honour the veteran British actor-director at the launch of a young filmmakers fund created in his name.
The Lord Attenborough Nfts Charitable fund aims to raise £1m ($1.55m) over two years to “enable talented young people to achieve their ambition as successful filmmakers through world class educational experiences”.
It will go towards offering more film-making scholarships to young people from different backgrounds and improving teaching facilities at the Nfts.
The gala dinner, which was hosted by Stephen Fry at Old Billingsgate in London last night (June 11), was introduced by Lord Attenborough’s son, theatre director Michael Attenborough, in place of his father, who was unable to attend.
Michael Attenborough said: “It was thanks to a Leverhulme scholarship to Rada at the age of 17, that my father was able to go on to enjoy a career that included acting in, producing and directing more than 70 Oscar and BAFTA winning...
