According to Hans Müller-Schlösser, the writer of the original play, premiered in 1913, the plot is based on a true story from the times of Emperor Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia. The story originally happened in Berlin in the 19th century, in which a baker was involved in a drunken knife fight and was sent to jail. The baker persuaded his journeyman assistant to go to jail instead of him. When in prison he died and therefore the baker was declared dead. Afterwards the baker was pardoned by the emperor.
