With the huge success of Aleksandr Ptushko's Sovscope spectacle "Ilya Muromets" (1956), and the release of his new film "Sampo" (1959), the 20th anniversary was chosen to re-release this film. This 1959 re-release featured a restored version with the sound re-dubbed to bring its sound up to 1959 audio standards.
This film adaptation of Carlo Collodi's "Pinocchio" was released only two months before Walt Disney's animated version. It helped lead to director Aleksandr Ptushko later being regarded as the "Russian Disney".
