Bradbury Foote wrote the original script entitled "One Came Home", also used as the working title. Since the onscreen credit states "original screenplay" by Grace Norton, it is not known if any of Foote's material was used in the film.
A considerable number of actors listed in studio records and casting call lists did not appear in the film. These are (with their character names): Helene Millard (Martha Winfield), Dora Clement (Guest), Richard Tucker (Guest), Arthur Stuart Hull (Guest), Dorothy Fay (Guest), Etta McDaniel (Chloe), Shirley Deane (Mrs. Plunkett), Don Dillaway (Mr. Plunkett) and Claude King (Man at Race Track).
Re-titled 'Sterling Metal' in order to avoid confusion with the similarly titled earlier version, Sporting Blood (1931), this film was first telecast in Los Angeles Friday 28 February 1958 on KTTV (Channel 11), followed by Philadelphia Wednesday 9 April 1958 on WFIL (Channel 6); it first aired in San Francisco 2 April 1959 on KGO (Channel 7), and, finally, in New York City 2 February 1961 on WCBS (Channel 2). Its original title has since been restored, and it's presently in the Turner Classic Films library.
