Original literary source: "Topaze", play in four acts first performed in Berlin in 1927 at the Théâtre de la Renaissance, then in Paris in 1928 at the Théâtre des Variétés.
Released at a time when financial scandals were tarnishing the Fourth Republic, the Minister of the Interior pushed the commission to impose cuts. Despite a fierce counter-attack, Pagnol was forced to delete three dialogue exchanges and the allusion to the Stavisky affair.
