According to Chuck Jones, the revelation of the animator in the ending is just for comedic value - Jones (the director) is speaking to the audience directly, asking "Who is Daffy Duck anyway? Would you recognize him if I did THIS to him?"
In animation historian Jerry Beck's 1994 poll of animators, film historians, and directors, this cartoon was rated the second greatest cartoon of all time.
Originally, Chuck Jones was to appear in live action as the mystery animator at the end, but it was decided late in production that it should be Bugs Bunny.
This short was completed and copyrighted in 1951 but not released until 1953. During this late 1940s-early-1950s period, Warner Bros. Cartoon Studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Cartoon Studios, and Walt Disney Productions/RKO Radio Pictures stockpiled many cartoons, releasing them a year or two after completion.
