Over the last year, I've been watching Smallville for the first time, and for the most part, the DC TV show's storytelling stands the test of time when it comes to depicting Clark Kent's (Tom Welling) evolution into Superman—but season 2, episode 2, "Heat" is an exception. For those that don't remember, the episode synopsis for "Heat" reads as such: "A sexy new teacher (Krista Allen) uses the power of pheromones to convince Lex to marry her; Clark loses control over an alarming new power." It's the Smallville episode when Clark Kent first discovers his heat vision powers.
Now I have to say, I think Smallville's use of Clark's heat vision as an analog for puberty and his burgeoning sexuality is well done, even if it's a bit on the nose. But the writers' ability to take something so fantastical as Superman being able to shoot heat lasers from his...

There are ghosts on and off the screen in Ridley Scott’s 28th feature, chief among them being Stanley Kubrick’s unrealized biopic of Napoleon Bonaparte, the Corsican military strategist who inveigled his way up through the ranks of the military to become the leader of France not once but twice. That at the age of nearly 86 Scott has stepped up to finish what Kubrick couldn’t is something the British director will no doubt relish. But though his take on the story is his own, there’s still something elusive about Bonaparte’s story that doesn’t make a coherent whole: as is consistent with history, Scott’s Napoleon is a lover and a fighter, an incongruity that leads to sharp changes in tone and a restlessly episodic narrative that can be overwhelming in its dates, names and places.

If Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s Michelle Yeoh wins the best actress Oscar on March 12, she will become the first Asian to do so. But she’s not the first to be nominated: Merle Oberon preceded Yeoh 87 years ago — though no one knew it at the time.
The star of 1935’s The Dark Angel, for which she was nominated, kept her Indian heritage hidden her entire life. Born in Bombay to a Sri Lankan-Maori mother and white father, Oberon grew up in poverty in Calcutta. When she was 17, she moved to England to pursue acting; fearing backlash from a racist entertainment industry, she claimed she was born in Tasmania and that her birth certificate was lost in a fire.
She broke out playing Anne Boleyn in director Alexander Korda’s The Private Life of Henry VIII in 1933, which led to her being cast in Sidney Franklin’s World War I drama The Dark Angel,...

Every once in a while, you'll hear the story of an actor being an absolute disaster to work with. Something like Jared Leto's behavior when he was the Joker in "Suicide Squad," pulling countless disgusting and offensive pranks on cast and crew all for the pursuit of "Method acting." Now, when a middling talent like Jared Leto pulls that kind of stunt, society as a whole mostly agrees to laugh at him, and dislike him for treating crew members so poorly. But what happens when the person childishly tormenting everybody is a genuine generational acting talent?
Marlon Brando, the iconic star of films like "The Godfather'' and "Apocalypse Now," was known and respected for his great talent as an actor. But it was because of this remarkable talent, that he was often able to get away with on-set antics that other performers could not dream of. From making ridiculous...

"Mike," which premiered on Hulu on Aug. 25, tells the story of Mike Tyson, played by Trevante Rhodes. The show separates Tyson's life into categories that also serve as episode titles: thief, monster, lover, jailbird, cannibal. Tyson has been associated, in so many words, with all of these labels during his lifetime, along with many others. To tell his story is to tangle with those contradictions - and to face off with a legacy that threatens to obscure the man at the heart of it all.
The real-life Tyson has often provoked strong emotions among the general public, from reverence to disdain. "Mike" doesn't try to frame Tyson's story through any particular lens, though. It's more interested in laying the character bare and in getting to the heart of what made him who he is. Rhodes's Tyson spends a lot of the show narrating his own life story, smiling and...

Sometimes there’s no better ratings boost for an unauthorized account of a celebrity’s life than that person speaking out against it. Or in the case of HBO’s “Winning Time,” several folks. Thanks to former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson’s documented displeasure with Hulu digging into his very public life, the eight-part limited series “Mike” has landed more eyeballs. The question, however, is will they be satisfied with what they see?
Initially, the answer is no. Unlike Tyson in his heyday, “Mike” takes a minute to heat up. Despite teasing Tyson shockingly biting rival Evander Holyfield’s ear to kick off the series, the first episode “Thief” travels back to Tyson’s rough Brooklyn upbringing as the youngest child being raised by a poor, single mother of three. It’s a bleak existence that’s truly hard to watch, mostly due to Zaiden James’ very effective performance as young Mike.

Mike Tyson is a figure with unusual voltage, a celebrity who fought for his spot in the firmament with a weaponized charisma. The champion boxer is relentless even by the standards of the sport, with the famous incident in which he bit the ear of Evander Holyfield casting a shadow over his achievements. Outside the ring, he’s simultaneously known for a surprising soft-spokenness that makes the listener want to lean in and for a tendency toward violence — including a 1992 conviction for the rape of Desiree Washington — that repels.
A serious reckoning with Tyson’s place in our culture, in the currently on-trend format of dramatized retelling via limited series, would deal with both sides of the Tyson image, and the complicated ways they feed each other — the fact that the allure of Tyson is bolstered by our sense of him as threatening. This is not the path that Hulu’s new series “Mike” takes.

Apple Studios will back Ridley Scott’s passion project, “Kitbag,” the latest cinematic attempt to find out what made Napoleon tick.
Joaquin Phoenix, fresh off his Oscar win for “Joker,” will play the military genius and French emperor. Scott previously plumbed Napoleonic territory with “The Duellists,” his 1977 feature film debut and the story of the rivalry between a Bonapartist and a French soldier. The director is currently putting the finishing touches on “The Last Duel” (a theme emerges in Scott’s oeuvre!), a historical epic with Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Ben Affleck.
“Kitbag” boasts a script by David Scarpa, who previously worked with Scott on “All the Money in the World.” It’s easily the kind of movie that traditional Hollywood studios used to make, before they abandoned those in favor of franchise movies and superhero flicks.

Rita Moreno‘s iconic and eclectic career is the stuff of Hollywood legends — and so is her 5,500-square-foot, multilevel contemporary home.
Nestled in the Berkeley Hills and overlooking the San Francisco Bay, Moreno — who moved into the three-bedroom, thre-and-a-half bath home with her late husband Leonard Gordon 16 years ago — has decorated the space in colorful ways to reflect her Puerto Rican heritage, world travels and family, which includes respectful nods to the “lust” and “love” of her life: ex-Marlon Brando and Gordon, her husband of 45 years.

Frank Langella played an aging writer in Starting Out in the Evening (2007). Who would have figured this for typecasting?
In his superb memoir, Dropped Names: Famous Men and Women As I Knew Them (HarperCollins), Langella reveals that he is an incomparable memoirist and storyteller, recalling his encounters with scores of luminaries from the world of entertainment in a career spanning half a century. All of these luminaries are deceased and the cast of characters is listed “by order of disappearance”. Just as well, as many of the revelations are quite shocking.
Langella must be the most sociable and congenial actor on the planet, as the busyness of his social and professional lives and the breadth and depth of his friendships, romantic liaisons and acquaintances are very impressive indeed. He met Marilyn Monroe in 1953. She stepped out of a limousine and said “hi” to the adolescent from Bayonne,...
