Mellingham is a fictional English town. Exterior scenes of the town were filmed in Chipping Campden, a small market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England.
Janette Scott's real life mother, Thora Hird, appears in a minor role, but is not listed in the credits. Not sure if they ever appeared together in any other films.
Having ditched their car and escaped on foot over the Cumbrian hills, the couple are next seen entering a shop from Waxhouse Gate, St Albans - with a good view in the background of St Albans' Clock Tower (the only surviving medieval town belfry in England).
The exterior shots of the village were filmed in Bourton-on-the-Water not Chipping Campden.
