Rhodes and Stone are sent to rescue the rightful heir to the throne of an Indian state without force, knowing to do so would lead to a colonial war.

A by-the-book officer from a regiment of Scottish Highlanders recognizes one of the Lancers' most trusted non-commissioned officers as a deserter from his regiment eight years before. He demands that the man be turned over to him to face a court martial. Colonel Standish agrees that Lieutenants Rhodes and Storm be allowed to accompany the Highlanders back to their base to testify as character witnesses at the daffadar's trial.

While on leave, Rhodes and Storm get mixed up with thieves, a crooked police commissioner, and beautiful school teachers while searching for stolen rifles.

Rhodes and Storm are sent to give a present to an old Marahadja. On their way, they meet a chieftain whose people are dying of hunger and thirst. They sell the present to buy food. All the have left is a gift of friendship.

Ruthless Mohammed Akbar is over thrown by Jaffar Kul Sidri. Sidri then agrees to maintain peace but after Rhodes and Storm are captured by Akbar the peace is at risk.
