When a maharajah who was friendly to the British Empire is assassinated, Tara, his lovely young wife, requests Lt. Storm be detached to train guards loyal to her against enemies who would remove her as regent. Colonel Standish is concerned that the troops Storm trains could be used to attack British forces and he dispatches Lt. Rhodes to determine whether the Maharani harbors anti-British feelings.

An aging, stubborn war hero known as "Cecil Of Kabul" is being pensioned out after one last inspection tour of the forward bases. He takes an opportunity to command the 77th in an effort to defeat the gang of cutthroats lead by bandit king Akbar, though outnumbered. He tries to bluff them, but is captured instead.

A by-the-book officer from a regiment of Scottish Highlanders recognizes one of the Lancers' most trusted non-commissioned officers as a deserter from his regiment eight years before. He demands that the man be turned over to him to face a court martial. Colonel Standish agrees that Lieutenants Rhodes and Storm be allowed to accompany the Highlanders back to their base to testify as character witnesses at the daffadar's trial.
