James Whitmore plays Victor Mature's father figure and helped raise him in the film, despite the fact that Mature was actually eight years older than Whitmore.

He was one of the most important leaders of the Oglala Lakota from 1868 to 1909. He was one of the most capable Native American opponents whom the U.S. Army faced in the western territories. He defeated the U.S. during Red Cloud's War, which was a fight over control of the Powder River Country in northeastern Wyoming and southern Montana.
The fort used in this movie is the same fort used in the 1956 Randolph Scott movie...7th Calvary.
