This is the first Bergman film where Death makes a personal appearance. In a pastiche of silent-film slapstick, played by an Italian acrobat troupe, Death suddenly jumps in.
Hasse Ekman's The Girl from the Third Row (1949) was made as a reaction to the dark view of life in this film, wanting to show that the world after all is not as horrible as it might appear. Ekman starred in both.
