Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.
Restorations of Soviet sci-fi trip Ikarie Xb 1, The Unknown, and The Music of Regret stream, as does the recent Plan 75. January’s Criterion Editions are Inside Llewyn Davis, Farewell Amor, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and (most intriguingly) the long-out-of-print The Man Who Fell to Earth, Blu-rays of which go for hundreds of dollars.
See the lineup below and learn more here.

Supernatural Season 15 was confirmed by The CW back in January 2019, obviously to no one’s surprise. However, it turns out that the Winchesters aren’t going to live forever, since we would later learn that said fifteenth season will be the final one for the long-running genre series, set for a 20-episode run. Believe it or not, Supernatural is the longest-running genre series in American broadcast television history. The series is also the last remaining vestige of The WB network, which merged with Upn in 2006 to create The CW network as we know it today.
The latest news? Supernatural Season 15 is back from a covid-driven hiatus for its final episodes.

Jack is back!
His return was a surprise to Sam, Dean, and Cas on Supernatural Season 15 Episode 11.
But the plan he revealed could be the one Sam and Dean have been hoping for!
The two didn't jump up and down when Jack told him Billie's plan, though.
But if the goddess of luck is on their side, and now Billie seems to be on their side, well, it's logical that other beings are tired of Chuck, too.
They all want him gone.
The question is, though, will all their combined power be enough to take him down? He is God, after all.
Chuck didn't do this to keep us off our game. He wants us weak cuz he's coming for us, Sammy. And if he does, and we haven't figured this out, we're Doa.

Supernatural Season 15 Episode 11
Sam and Dean have seen a lot of troubles in their life, but nothing quite compares to being a normal person devoid of special divine luck. That special luck was how Sam and Dean have gotten out of any number of scrapes, miraculously had no money problems and skirted death an astounding number of times.
Without that, they now have normal problems. In fact, Sam has to get annoyed at Dean for eating their last travel sandwich because for once they have to be on a budget. Add to that Dean’s lactose intolerance, Baby’s tendency to break down, and -- oh, right -- literally God wanting them dead? They’ve got...

A few years ago the editors of Shadowlocked asked me to compile a list of what was initially to be, the ten greatest movie matte paintings of all time. A mere ten selections was too slim by a long shot, so my list stretched considerably to twenty, then thirty and finally a nice round fifty entries. Even with that number I found it wasn’t easy to narrow down a suitably wide ranging showcase of motion picture matte art that best represented the artform. So with that in mind, and due to the surprising popularity of that 2012 Shadowlocked list (which is well worth a visit, here Ed), I’ve assembled a further fifty wonderful examples of this vast, vital and more extensively utilised than you’d imagine – though now sadly ‘dead and buried’ – movie magic.
