During his first discussion with Burt Lancaster's character (a hunting guide), Peter Lorre's character mentions that the hunting guide had been leading an expedition to "kill a lion" during his earlier mishap - there are no African lions in the Sahara, which is the "Rope of Sand" mentioned in the film's title.
The title "Rope of Sand" refers to the Sahara Desert, however the setting is "Southwest Africa" and Capetown is mentioned several times - these geographical features lie at opposite ends of the continent (the Sahara in the north).
When Mike and his hunting companion are found with a diamond they are tortured to get information on where they found it. The two men were found in the desert with clear tracks to and from the diamond find site. It would have been simple to track where they had been.
