Harvey is based on a play written by American playwright and screenwriter Mary Coyle Chase (1907-1981). The play was adapted for the movie by American screenwriters Oscar Brodney and Myles Connolly. The play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1945.
It showed the audience at the very beginning of the movie that Elwood (James Stewart) was in a world of his own, away from troublesome "worldly" things. He lives only for his friends (real or imaginary) and his family.
The 2001 film Donnie Darko also features what appears to be a giant rabbit that only the protagonist can see (he's actually a teenager wearing a Halloween costume, as Donnie knows), but Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly claims that he has never seen Harvey.
