Second Officer Anne Davis
- [last lines]
- Captain Jonathan Shepard: [walking into broad daylight] Great heavens! It's nine o'clock in the morning! And I asked you out to dinner.
- Anne Davis: We could always make it breakfast, couldn't we?
- Captain Jonathan Shepard: Of course.
- [exeunt, passing two ratings]
- Able Seaman: You know, Harvey, these boys worry me. Four stripes on 'is arm, and he don't know what time of the day it is.
- Anne Davis: There's an air raid going on up top.
- Captain Jonathan Shepard: A bad one?
- Anne Davis: No, not very.
- Captain Jonathan Shepard: Won't your family be worried about you?
- Anne Davis: I have no family here. My father lives in Canada.
- Captain Jonathan Shepard: I thought that, surely, you must be married or something.
- Anne Davis: No, sir, not at all.
- Captain Jonathan Shepard: Doesn't that seem a little odd, if you don't mind my saying so?
- Anne Davis: I was going to be married last year... it didn't work out.
- Captain Jonathan Shepard: His fault or yours?
- Anne Davis: ...He was at Dunkirk. He was listed as Missing in Action. It was just a year ago, only last week. He was rather a wonderful man. Not brilliant or dashing or anything like that but, just rather wonderful.
- Captain Jonathan Shepard: Sorry.
- Anne Davis: Actually, I think it helps to talk about these things, don't you, sir?
- Captain Jonathan Shepard: [Promptly] No, I don't. As a matter of fact, I don't think it helps at all. Getting emotional about things is a peacetime luxury. Wartime is much too painful.
- Anne Davis: But you can't turn off your emotions just because there's a war on. You can't do anything about your feelings.
- Captain Jonathan Shepard: Yes, you can.
