This was the first of the Italian sword and sandal/mythological muscleman movie for Gordon Scott.
Although this is now regarded as one of the better sword and sandal/mythological muscleman movies, and has a name star (Gordon Scott) in the lead, American International did not release this film in the United States until almost three years after it was produced. By this time, the genre was in decline due to rising production costs resulting in lower production values.
The original Italian production was processed and printed by Technicolor. In the United States, American International, who released this film as "Goliath and the Vampires" (1964), had the elements printed on Eastman Color stock and release prints struck by Pathe labs. As expected, surviving 35mm release prints have faded and lack the vibrant color of the original production.
The screenplay was written by Sergio Corbucci and Duccio Tessari. About a half decade later , they would be major creative contributors, as writers and directors, to the next big Italian film craze, the "spaghetti western."
This was an example of American International's practice of releasing a film under multiple titles. It was released under the titles "Goliath and the Vampires," "Samson vs. the Vampires" and in television syndication as simply "The Vampires."
