Roger Corman's 1960 feature films "House of Usher" was the first film in a long series of Edgar Allan Poe-based movies at American International Pictures. From 1960 to 1964, Corman directed eight Poe films, with all but one of them starring Vincent Price. After "House of Usher," Corman made "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Premature Burial," the anthology film "Tales of Terror," "The Raven," "The Haunted Palace," "The Masque of the Red Death," and "The Tomb of Ligeia." Technically, 1963's "The Haunted Palace" isn't a Poe movie. It was named after Poe's 1893 poem but was in fact based on the 1927 short novel "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" by H.P. Lovecraft. Poe, it seems, was a bigger marquee name than Lovecraft, so the latter author's story was merely folded into Corman's short-lived but well-remembered Poe subgenre.

Verna's deal with the Usher siblings ultimately leads to their deaths, but she is not the true villain. The Ushers' desire for wealth and success is what drives the tragic events in the show. Verna shows mercy to Lenore, Roderick's granddaughter, granting her a non-painful death and revealing the positive future her death will bring by creating a non-profit organization to help domestic abuse victims. Verna's intentions are not purely evil, but rather tied to fulfilling her contract with Roderick and Madeline.

Despite seemingly being the main antagonist for the show, Carla Gugino offers some clarification on The Fall of the House of Usher's family death deal.

With just two episodes remaining in The Fall of the House of Usher, we can imagine that all our questions will finally be answered. What did Madeline and Roderick do all those years ago that made them so paranoid? More importantly, why does Roderick think he killed his children when clearly they all died due to circumstances, none of which involved Roderick directly? The Pit and the Pendulum is a dark tale of torture and leaves an eerie mark on the reader. Now, will it be Frederick who gets tortured to death? Or will he torture someone else?

Now we know that Roderick betrayed Auggie, but up until now, the story goes that Roderick was doing everything in his power to support him. They even rehearsed together in the wee hours of the night to make sure Roderick wouldn’t mess up the trial.

The Fall of the House of Usher is filmmaker Mike Flanagan’s gloriously morbid remix of author Edgar Allen Poe’s best-known stories and poems, and it’s winning raves from critics (with a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes). Even those totally unfamiliar with Poe probably found some glimmer of recognition amid the show’s nods to his best-known tales — such as “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Raven” and “The Cask of Amontillado” — given how Poe’s stories have threaded through pop culture over the last 175 years or so.

Mickey Zide, an exhibition and distribution specialist who later went into producing films including “Dirty Mary Crazy Larry,’ died Nov. 10 in La Quinta, Calif. of natural causes. He was 90.

Born in Detroit, Zide was the third generation of his family to work in the film business, and got his start working as a salesman for Columbia Pictures in Detroit. His father Jack and brother Martin owned Allied Film Exchange, the largest independent distributor in Midwest, which released films for companies including Aip, Crown and Atlantic Releasing.

He became VP of sales for Sam Arkoff’s American International Pictures, where he booked films such as “Foxy Brown,” “Last House on the Left” and “The Pit and the Pendulum.”

Barbara Steele has one of her better performance showcases in Camillo Mastrocinque’s classy ghost story with a somewhat dispiriting twist. Steele’s fan-collectors won’t need extra encouragement, as she’s in most every scene and gets to play a variety of moods from delicate to seductive to outright poisonous. Quality performances flatter a flawed screenplay, and the fine direction and attentive cinematography clearly inspired Steele to give it everything she had. Severin’s quality HD transfer is everything we’d want, with dual language tracks and good extras including a Kat Ellinger commentary and a second track featuring stellar input from Ms. Steele herself.

Though I was lucky enough to have seen the original Elvira film, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, in theatres, the second adventure of the "Mistress of the Dark" escaped me in the early 2000s. Thankfully, Scream Factory (Shout! Factory's rad horror imprint) has us all covered with their brand-new restoration of Elvira's Haunted Hills. You can tell that the Halloween season is getting closer, between various retailers already donning their shelves with tons of decorations, the days are getting shorter, and Turner Classic Movies has debuted their October schedule online, which features an abundance of genre awesomeness that will be hitting airwaves this fall. If necessity is the mother of invention, as the saying goes, then Roger Corman is the dad of opportunity; swooping in and throwing around minimal coin but expecting maximum return (or at the very least, something in focus). But the King of the B’s has always attracted the hungry and talented, and so it was when a youngster by the name of Francis Ford Coppola was afforded the chance to helm his first (soft core flicks aside) official feature, Dementia 13 (1963). Part Psycho, part semi-Gothic psychodrama, it served as a stepping stone between Hitchcock and Bava, eventually leading to a slasher formula that is still impossible to kill.

Out of all of Poe’s works, few have had as big of an impact on me as “The Pit and the Pendulum.” Like many youngsters with an interest in the macabre, it was the first to immediately grab my attention, its title conjuring images of a massive, swinging blade cutting a poor sap wide open. Of course, there’s more to the poem than that—it’s focused less on the titular blade and more on the paranoia it creates, as well as painting a portrait of the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition. It also has, quite infamously, one of the most frustrating deus ex machinas of all time, where the French army stops the swinging pendulum mere seconds before it can bisect our bound protagonist, much to the disappointment of English students the world over. At this past weekend’s Overlook Film Festival, Roger Corman was on hand to receive the “Master of Horror Award,” presented by Mick Garris. There are few people in the movie industry that have had the long lasting effect that Roger Corman has, and I was honored to speak with him during the festival to get his thoughts on modern filmmaking, seeing his older films digitally restored, and he also gave his advice to young filmmakers looking to stand out from the pack.

The Monsterpalooza convention in Pasadena, California this coming weekend will afford convention-goers a rare opportunity to meet the last of the great horror film stars, the Queen of Horror herself, actress Barbara Steele.

Ms. Steele, who is best known to genre fans for her work in Mario Bava’s Black Sunday (1960), Roger Corman’s The Pit and the Pendulum (1961), and Mario Caiano’s Nightmare Castle (1965), will be on hand to sign autographs and pose for photos with fans on Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8, 2017.

The convention will be held at the Pasadena Convention Center, 300 East Green Street, Pasadena, CA 91101 from April 7 to the 9th, 2017.

To be considered a genius, you need only one great idea. For Moses, it was parting the Red Sea, then closing it with Pharaoh’s army still inside. Bach had counterpoint. And Lady Godiva did that thing with the horse.

Six decades ago, Roger Corman got a really great idea. Realising that young people were being ignored by Hollywood, he began making tons of super-low-budget films about vampires, monsters, mutants, ghosts and moody bikers. The films had names such as Swamp Women, She Gods of Shark Reef, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Fast and the Furious. This was preferable to films with names such as That Touch of Mink and Father Goose.

One would think having played Captain Hook in Peter Pan, Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies and voicing DC villains like Sinestro and Ra's Al Ghul in animated films--as well as a couple more authoritarian figures in Star Wars: Rebels--would have gotten any desire to be evil out of actor Jason Isaacs’ system.

And yet, he’s playing a more enigmatic character in director Gore Verbinski’s twisted new thriller A Cure for Wellness, which follows Dane DeHaan as a financial broker named Lockhard to Switzerland to retrieve the CEO of his company who is thought to have lost his marble in search of a cure at a spa located at an old castle in the Alps. Once there, Lockhard breaks his leg in a car accident, and he’s put under the care of Isaacs’ Dr. Vollmar, creator of the cure based around the area’s underground waters and their healing properties.

When you get Roger Corman and Vince Price together you tend to get a stylised horror film that is hard not to love. While Tower of London may not be their best collaboration, it is an interesting take on Shakespeare’s play of the nefarious King who killed his way to the top…

Corman’s film though is a more mix-and-match tale for Richard III which pulls in Macbeth and Hamlet to make the tale much more ghoulish. Featuring ghosts that haunt Vincent Price’s Richard of Gloucester it is very clear that Price relishes the prospect of taking on a Shakespearian role, but hams it up for all it is worth.

It’s something of an understatement to say that the work of poet and short story writer Edgar Allan Poe has had a lasting effect on the horror genre. In the history of the horror genre, there has been no shortage of movies adapted from the great Edgar Allan Poe. From the classic 1935 Universal adaptation of “The Raven," to the brilliant gothic Roger Corman/Vincent Price collaborations of the 1960s, and even through Stuart Gordon’s 1991 filming of “The Pit and the Pendulum” for Full Moon Features, there’s not a corner of horror that hasn’t been touched by the works of Poe. This makes any new adaptation of the author’s work challenging, though, because so many horror fans may carry a “been there, seen that” mentality towards the umpteenth retelling of “The Tell-Tale Heart.” It is to the credit of directors Bart Mastronardi and Alan Rowe Kelly that their new anthology, aptly titled Tales of Poe, offers a new spin on an author whose work has been brought to the screen for nearly 100 years.
