"You know how hard it is for him to try to find work out here with his record now..." Monument Releasing has unveiled a trailer for the new film both written and directed by acclaimed indie actor/filmmaker Mark Webber, titled Flesh and Blood. Webber tells a very personal story, blurring the line between narrative and documentary, involving his own actual, real-life family. The title of the film is a reference to his decision to confront a person from his past, raising the question: "Will Mark's life remain defined by his own flesh and blood?" In addition to Webber, the cast includes Guillermo Santos, Mark's younger brother who struggles with Asperger's Syndrome in real life, Big G played by Guillermo's actual father, and Cheri played by Cheri Honkala, Mark's real-life mother, anti-poverty activist, and the Green Party's nominee for vice-president in the 2012 Us presidential election. Her activism and her choices...

Kong is back, transformed into a ‘MonsteVerse’ colossus suitable for combat with Kaiju-sized foes. The key inspiration is video games but the day is saved by capable performers in mostly amusing roles. Even though the show treats its fantasy halfway seriously, it’s still an infantile guns ‘n’ monsters romp, embellished with impressive visual effects.

Tonight on ABC's Jimmy KImmel Live, Kong: Skull Island star Tom Hiddleston unveiled the new trailer for the massive monster movie I'm most excited about. There has been a lot of talk about the melding of worlds between Kong and fellow Legendary Pictures products Godzilla and Pacific Rim, and this trailer definitely builds a solid basis for confirmation of that idea. While Pacific Rim has hit numerous snags in the development of its sequel, currently on the backburner, a sequel to Godzilla has been in continuous production ever since the release of Gareth Edwards 2014 film. The film has gained and lost key crew, including directors, but there doesn't seem to have been any question that Big G would return in his new American incarnation....

This summer saw the return of the King of the Monsters in Gareth Edwards’ epic Godzilla and a sequel is coming in 2018, but it looks like the Big G is coming back to the big screen sooner than anticipated. The Hollywood Reporter has word that Toho, the studio responsible for creating Godzilla 60 years ago, is producing a new Godzilla film due to the success of the American reboot. There has been no cast or crew announced, but the film is expected to hit in 2016. The film would be the 29th Godzilla film from the company and the first in 12 years since 2004′s Godzilla: Final Wars.
THR quotes a Toho staffer as saying “This is very good timing after the success of the American version this year: if not now, then when? The licensing contract we have with Legendary places no restrictions on us making domestic versions”.

August 6th and 9th, 1945 forever changed the course of history. When the first nuclear bombs were dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, World War II ended, but a new fear was born that dominated the thoughts of all men, women, and children for decades to come. The Cold War, atomic bomb testing, a cartoon turtle telling children to “duck and cover”, and this new technology that had the actual potential to literally end the world changed the perception of what was scary. Art reflects life, so cinema began to capitalize on these fears. Gone were the days of creepy castles, cobwebs, bats, vampires, werewolves, and the other iconic images that ruled genre cinema in film’s earliest decades. Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla” reboot made a bazillion dollars (or something like that), so it’s gotta be pretty good, right? Apparently while it is admittedly pretty good, it’s not perfect, and the folks at Honest Trailers have a couple of bones (or is that MUTOs?) to pick with the Big G. Let’s see what those crazy kids have to say, shall we? (Obviously it goes without saying, right? Massive Spoilers here if you haven’t seen the movie yet.) I get the whole Bryan Cranston thing. And the whole “Wait, when is Godzilla showing up” thing. I don’t really count footage of his fins swimming around the ocean as an appearance, by the way. Plus, the MUTOs were kind of lame. Couldn’t Godzilla have fought cooler looking monsters? The whole Godzilla history was also really, well, stupid. Dude just shows up to fight after half a century?...

This news warms my heart like a newly delivered basket of puppies and kittens. The mother of all Kaiju movies, 1954's Godzilla, or Gojira for you purists out there, is getting itself a remastering in Japan for the ages! Even cooler? The sequels are getting some love too!
According to Yahoo! Movies, at a humble Tokyo laboratory the original 1954 black-and-white film is stomping back with a digital makeover that delivers four times the image quality of high definition.
The effort with "4K" technology is carefully removing scratches and discoloration from the films and also unearthing hidden information on the reel-to-reel. Experts say the chemical reactions used to make old movies stored far greater detail than was visible with the limited projection technology of the era, as well as with subsequent digital updates. If all the hidden information of a reel-to-reel is ever brought out, quality would approximate 8K, they say.

Gareth Edwards' Godzilla film is making its way to DVD and Blu-ray on September 16th and, today, an extended clip dropped onto the web that's culled from the epic battle between Big G and a Muto. Yes, the one at the end of the movie where all of the action happens. It's a pretty great throw-down that culminates in the reveal of Godzilla's atomic blast.

“I can’t believe that Godzilla was the only surviving member of its species… But if we continue conducting nuclear tests, it’s possible that another Godzilla might appear somewhere in the world again!”
The original Japanese Godzilla from 1954 is a historical classic. While it may seem a little hokey when considering contemporary special effects capabilities, the film nonetheless seems to rectify the dated destruction scenes with realistic, dramatic, and depressing aftermath scenes where orphaned children are crying, families are destroyed, and lives are lost as a result of the ‘Big G’s’ destructive wake. When analyzing the monster’s destructive capabilities it’s important to remember that Godzilla was produced at a time when the after-effects of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were still remnant in the Japanese psyche and Western society at large with the looming Cold War and the possibility of a nuclear holocaust. Ever since he first rose out of the ocean on movie screens sixty years ago, Godzilla has achieved a level of pop culture ubiquity shared by few other fictional characters. Much like Count Dracula, the Frankenstein monster, Sherlock Holmes, and King Kong, you can say Godzilla’s name to virtually anyone in the world and they will know who you’re talking about, even if they’ve never seen a single Godzilla movie. But the franchise has been dormant since the 50th anniversary film Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). Now we have a new take on the King of Monsters – brought to us by Warner Bros., Legendary Pictures, and British filmmaker Gareth Edwards, who directed the acclaimed sci-fi indie Monsters (2010) – and it’s awesome. Godzilla is a true epic, a welcome return to movies for the character, and a perfect way to celebrate the big guy’s diamond jubilee.

The only thing Hollywood loves more than giving itself awards (how long is Awards Season these days, 9 months?), it’s the taste of money. And since Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla” opened just under $100 million over the weekend, with another $100 million (or so) from overseas for a nice chunk of $200 million (give or take) in just a week of release, you can bet your fiery atomic breathing reptile that Hollywood’s already eyeballing a sequel. Edwards tells Deadline that he would take the same approach to the sequel as he did for the first film, by exercising “restraint” when it comes to showing off the Big G. So I guess this means he’s officially returning to direct. Made for a reported $160 million budget (not counting the film’s ginormous advertising budget), “Godzilla” has officially earned just under $200 million worldwide. That’s pretty good, but it remains to be seen how it...

Godzilla isn’t just a monster. He’s more than just an ancient Japanese movie god. He is an icon of science fiction, more responsible than any other creature for bringing kaiju films to the awareness of the world. Sure, Gamera is cool too, but the international cinematic community hasn’t quite embraced the giant turtle the way they have this giant lizard. Since his debut in 1954, Godzilla has become a household name, and his appearance is legendary. Even with the hiccup that was Roland Emmerich’s 1998 attempt (resulting in a creature that is rejected as proper canon to the series), Godzilla has remained the king of the monsters, literally getting bigger and bigger every year. (Seriously, he’s now more than twice as tall as the original from 1954.) These films sure are fun to watch, but when you see enough of them, you can’t help but wonder: Could a creature the size of Godzilla actually...

Directed by Ishirô Honda, Japanese classic Gojira (1954) – or Godzilla – spawned 30-ish sequels, along with innumerable spin-offs and spoofs. You might have heard a tiny bit about one of them this week. Inspired by 1953's The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms and the 1952 re-release of King Kong (1939), Gojira started a lengthy stream of Kaiju ("strange creature") films leading right up to Cloverfield (2008). And yet, I wonder how many of Big G's new fans have seen the original B&W version, and whether it can possibly stand up to scrutiny 60 years later? Armed with a free DVD from a newspaper that Loves demonising imaginary monsters, I set about acquainting myself.
The film begins with the mysterious sinking of not one, but two, model boats. This causes great consternation at the Maritime Safety Bureau, where hysterical families await news of their loved ones. Could it be an underwater volcano? Floating mines? "Send more ships!

It's a given that Godzilla is going to be a big moneymaker this weekend, but just how well will it do? Fandango seems to think that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have a blockbuster on their hands.
According to Fandango, Godzilla is grabbing 80% of ticket sales already, topping the site's Fanticipation buzz meter with absolute ease, raking in 94 out of 100 points. What's more, the film is outselling Thor: The Dark World, World War Z, Prometheus, and Pacific Rim at the same point in the site's advance sales cycle. It currently represents more than 80% of this weekend’s ticket sales on Fandango.
“The fans appreciate the more serious tone of the movie, following the lead of the original film from 60 years ago,” says Fandango Fangirl Tiffany Smith, “and the slow roll-out of the monster has been epic. We’ve had only a few peeks at what the new Godzilla really looks...

Much like Madonna, Matthew McConaughey and Miley Cyrus, Godzilla illustrates a time-honored showbiz dictum: The best way to sustain your superstardom is to repeatedly reinvent yourself. During six decades of Japanese-produced low-tech monster mashes and made-in-America CGI-stuffed spectacles, Big G has remained au courant through the miracle of image makeovers. From nuclear-age nightmare to doting single parent, from freelance global defender to butt-kicking tag-team wrestler, he has evolved and developed, evincing a versatility that might make Meryl Streep turn green -- or, perhaps more appropriately, charcoal gray -- with envy. In "Godzilla," slated to open this weekend at theaters and drive-ins everywhere, The Original Gangsta Lizard has a bit less spring to his step, and a tad more spread to his waistline. But never mind: Even as he approaches eligibility for Social Security, Big G remains ever ready to rumble, and authoritatively defends his title as King of the Monsters in this.

With his big visage well and truly out there, and his film due to land in our cinemas this month, Warner Bros. and Legendary aren’t shy about showing Godzilla, though he’s only glimpsed briefly in this new clip from the film. That said, there is some information given away here that constitutes something spoilery, and you get a look at another huge beastie from the movie, so proceed with caution. Providing some context for Ken Watanabe’s oft-heard trailer line about the arrogance of man, here we find his Ichiro Serizawa and David Strathairn’s Admiral Senz wondering what the Big G’s chances are against another massive monster that is terrorizing the local populace. If you’re concerned about learning the outcome, don’t be as this is really just the build-up to a scrap in the film, with Godzilla adopting the giant creature equivalent of a “come at me,...

Once again, dear readers, I have to begin a column by apologizing for an unplanned absence. I’ve been very busy with work and family stuff lately, and I didn’t have the time to deliver the quality columns you’ve come to expect and deserve.
