Chucky, Annabelle, M3gan Photo: Brendan Meadows (Syfy) America loves its toys to death, at least if movies are any indication. Since the 1987 introduction of the murderous doll Chucky, killer toys have been a staple of the cineplex. Despite the modest returns of the Child’s Play series, Chucky continued to...

If previous Chucky films have adopted an ‘all thriller, no filler’ mantra, then Syfy’s upcoming TV series will be all puppetry and little-to-no CGI when it comes to animating that famous Devil Doll.
Entitled Child’s Play: The TV Series, the Powers That Be recently issued a direct-to-series order for Don Mancini’s latest Chucky venture, which will be angled as a continuation of the original film franchise with both Brad Dourif and Jessica Tilly set to reprise their iconic roles of Chucky and Tiffany, respectively.
But part of what makes Chucky so special (and indeed terrifying) is the meticulous puppet work and attention to detail that helps bring the Devil Doll to life, and it seems Child’s Play: The TV Series will honor tradition by ensuring that any pint-sized horror will be rendered using 100% puppetry. Which is to say that there will very little CGI used to animate the killer dolls.

MGM’s announcement of a Stranger Things-esque remake of Child’s Play has created an interesting fork in the road for everyone’s favorite Devil Doll.
Two weeks ago, for instance, we brought you the news that franchise creators Don Mancini and long-time producer David Kirschner had mapped out plans for a live-action TV show based on Chucky and his wicked ways. Seven-time Child’s Play veteran Brad Dourif had also signed on to voice the pint-sized serial killer, though it’s fair to say MGM’s shock announcement threw a spanner in the works.
Thankfully, Bloody Disgusting caught up with Mancini and Kirschner recently to get their thoughts about the proposed Child’s Play remake. And don’t fret; that TV series is very much still on track. Or so says Don Mancini:
We’re still working on the series and also plan to continue the film franchise with Universal.

The Devil Doll is coming out to play… again.
Sources close to Collider allege that MGM has tapped Norwegian filmmaker Lars Klevberg (Polaroid) to spearhead a remake of the original Child’s Play movie from ’88.
David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith, the producers behind New Line’s wildly successful It, have climbed aboard, and we understand this project is totally unrelated to the recently-announced TV series in development from Don Mancini and fellow Chucky architect, David Kirschner.
Word is MGM plans to fast-track its “contemporary reboot,” which has a script from Tyler Burton Smith, whose credits include Kung Fury and Remedy’s deeply cinematic video game, Quantum Break. That means the modern-day Child’s Play will reportedly involve a “group of kids and a technologically-advanced doll that enters their world.” So, like Stranger Things, only with a wicked Devil Doll instead of the Shadow Monster? For the first time in three decades, Chucky is headed to the small screen in the form of Child’s Play: The TV Series.
Over on Twitter (h/t Bloody Disgusting), franchise veteran Don Mancini shared a tantalizing gif riddled with static and a very familiar Devil Doll. He’ll reportedly shepherd this long-rumored show with fellow Chucky architect, David Kirschner, though at least for now, details remain few and far between.
That won’t stem the tide of rumors, of course, and anyone who’s seen Cult of Chucky, the most recent movie installment in the time-honored Child’s Play series, will know that Mancini and Co. left the door open for that little redhead to return. As a matter of fact, earlier this year the filmmaker implied that Child’s Play: The TV Series was “deliberately set up at end of the last movie,” before warning budding viewers...

From Freddy Krueger to Jason Voorhees, Ghostface to Leatherface, the horror genre hasn’t exactly been left wanting for memorable villains through the years, but few are able to evoke the same level of primal fear as Chucky, that pint-sized devil doll that first scurried onto the silver screen via Child’s Play all the way back in ’88.
November 9th, 1988, to be exact, meaning that this week marked a very special occasion within the horror community. In fact, one could argue that November 9th ought to be celebrated as International Chucky Day, as John Lafia’s follow-up Child’s Play 2 also launched on that same day 27 years ago.
Since that time, Chucky has cemented his place in cinema’s pantheon of weird and wonderful movie villains, and this year’s Cult of Chucky proved that, yes, even after three decades, Brad Dourif’s demented Good Guy doll can still strike fear in our hearts.

*full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by Warner Bros. Director: David F. Sandberg. Writers: Gary Dauberman. Cast: Anthony Lapaglia, Samara Lee, Miranda Otto, Stephanie Sigman and Talitha Eliana Bateman. Annabelle: Creation is latest film set in an expanding Conjuring film universe. This title is a prequel to the first Annabelle (2014) movie. Very much an origin story, Annabelle: Creation explores the curse of a very recognizable doll. The film was written by Gary Dauberman, who also wrote the first Annabelle. In this outing, six orphans find a new, haunted place to live. Isolated on an old farm, the six girls are harassed by either a Devil doll or very dark demon. The focus on this title is on developing creepy scenes. Very much like a haunted house ride put to film, Annabelle: Creation offers one well rehearsed scare after another. The film is also a popcorn flick,...

Prepare to swear allegiance to the Cult of Chucky.
Four weeks out from release, Universal Pictures has conjured up a whole host of creepy stills – stills in which the Devil Doll checks into an asylum, much to the dismay of those haunted patients desperate for some sense of normalcy. But Chucky has other ideas in mind.
Building off the nightmarish events that transpired in Curse of Chucky, Don Mancini’s direct-to-video horror sequel primarily takes place in a mental hospital, where Nica (Fiona Dourif) is being nursed along the road to recovery. Also starring Summer H. Howell, Alex Vincent and Jennifer Tilly, who’s now considered to be a cornerstone of the Child’s Play franchise, Cult of Chucky is tailor-made for long-time supporters of the Devil Doll, but it’ll be fascinating to gauge how the film fares with lapsed fans and the moviegoing masses.

The Sawyer family may not hold the same level of prestige in the horror genre as, say, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, or even Chucky, the pint-sized Devil Doll who’s gearing up for a triumphant return in October, but make no mistake, that cannibalistic clan is the stuff of nightmares.
First introduced via Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre many moons ago, later this year directors Julian Maury and Alexandre Bustillo will be peeling back the many layers of the Sawyer family to uncover Leatherface, a horror prequel that’s set to deliver a jump-scare or three in October. The flick had its world premiere this week at FrightFest and so far, the reactions seem to be quite positive, which is definitely exciting to hear.

Whether it’s Call of Duty or The Fast and the Furious, space is often floated as a potential setting for ‘Title X’ when all other options have been exhausted, and the creators involved want to inject some excitement into a series that is beginning to spin its wheels.
More often than not, in the film industry that proposition is often tossed around as something an in-joke – a stupidly ambitious pitch that’s only made in jest. And though that may be true, that hasn’t stopped Don Mancini from proposing that Chucky’s next outing should catapult the pint-sized Devil Doll into the cosmos. Keep in mind that there’s a very good chance that Mancini is merely toying with the audience here, after he spoke to The Movie Crypt (via Bloody Disgusting) to promote the upcoming release of Cult of Chucky, the seventh instalment in the long-running slasher saga.

Presenting murderous moppets on screen is always a dicey proposition. For every The Bad Seed or The Omen, there is always The Good Son or Mikey skulking about. It’s all about the fear – making a five or ten year old believably frightening is hard to do. As audience members, we put our faith in filmmakers to produce tension, conflict, and danger in a palpable (but not necessarily plausible) way, and when it’s tested we end up wading through Children of the Corn. But when our faith is rewarded, we find ourselves in the Village of the Damned (1960), a seminal killer kid chiller.

*there are some minor spoilers here. Director: John R. Leonetti. Writer: Gary Dauberman. Cast: Annabelle Wallis, Ward Horton, Tony Amendola and Alfre Woodard. Annabelle is a prequel to James Wan's The Conjuring (2013). More of a segway, Annabelle brings a creepy doll out of the closet, from Lorraine and Ed Warren's collection - to the big screen. This Devil doll likes to bring its own group of followers with it, including a few Satanic cultists. Beelzebub is ready to do battle again, in his thousandth film and one couple must seek shelter in Christianity, just to survive. Slowly paced through middle sections and offering very little direct conflict, Annabelle is a creepy horror feature, which might satisfy a few movie-goers. A cursed doll is at the heart of this tale. Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

Prolific novelist best known for 633 Squadron, his book that was turned into a classic second world war film in 1964
The film 633 Squadron (1964) is a classic among second world war movies, despite what many see as wooden acting from its leads, Cliff Robertson, George Chakiris and Maria Perschy. Frederick E Smith, who has died aged 93, wrote the book upon which it was based. Canny film producer known for his horror and sci-fi classics
The producer Richard Gordon, who has died aged 85, was involved with several offbeat classics of horror and science-fiction cinema. These included Arthur Crabtree's Fiend Without a Face (1958), which climaxes with a still-astonishing siege of a power station by disembodied, tentacled, malicious human brains, and Antony Balch's Horror Hospital (1973), a lively and perverse mad-scientist satire featuring Michael Gough and Robin Askwith.
It may be that Gordon and his brother, Alex, so closely associated that many reference sources mistakenly say they were twins, were the first people to take the now-common route from movie-crazed kid to industry professional, later the path of film-makers as different as Jean-Luc Godard and Steven Spielberg. As schoolboys, the Gordons founded a film society, then wrote for fan magazines and performed menial roles on low-budget productions, always motivated by a boundless enthusiasm for the films...

With thoughts from Tom Weaver on the producer of Devil Doll.
Prolific author and legendary film buff Tom Weaver has been a friend of Tfh since before we existed, and his essential series of book-length interviews with horror/sci fi filmmakers, writers and actors has mirrored what we try to do here at the site, which is disseminate information and opinions on the movies we all love.
Tom’s latest book examines the career of Devil Doll producer Richard Gordon, friend of both Karloff and Lugosi, one of the first fans-turned-pro and whose long career has finally ended. Richard was 85.[More about The Horror Hits of Richard Gordon here.]
Here’s Tom:
As Tim Lucas of Video Watchdog once pointed out, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas (etc.) are called the first people to have grown up movie nuts and then become moviemakers themselves, but Years before them came Alex and Richard Gordon, who loved movies as kids in England, belonged to fan clubs,...

The man who teamed Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee together for the first time in 1958′s Corridors Of Blood and brought us the flying brains in Fiend Without A Face (1958) is gone. A great loss to the Horror Film community, Richard Gordon not only produced a string of beloved horror films in the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s, but was a staple at conventions and a huge supporter of those who wrote on the subject of film. He produced his last film 30 years ago but his always-informative ‘letters to the editor’ to a variety of publications from small-time fan magazines up to the New York Times, offering corrections, and recollections, remain an enduring legacy for film fans.
Born in England, Gordon moved to the U.S. in 1947, and two years later, at age 23, he set up his own company Gordon Films, distributing imported films in the United States. Joined by writer Tom Weaver,...

First order of business … a big thank you to Dennis for covering last week and doing it so brilliantly. Honestly, I'm glad I didn't have to recap that episode, given it had one of the most riveting cliffhanger moments we've seen on this show and I'm not sure I'd have been emotionally capable of writing so soon after.
I'm talking, of course, about Andy storming out on his date with Holly, leaving us all in high suspense over the future of their romantic relationship.
Oh, I guess something also went on with Jessica about to burn to death. Might as well kick off with how that all turned out …
Burned & Spurned
Picking up right where we left off, Jessica opens the mansion doors to blinding sunlight and immediately bursts into flames, thereby freeing actress Deborah Ann Woll to star in that remake of Bewitched everybody's suddenly so keen on.
Kidding!

It’s been over 10 years since cultural icon Stephen Fry released his first memoir, Moab Is My Washpot, which left leaders with only a portion of the story, ending as it did in his teenage years, just released from a prison sentence for credit card fraud, with college - the legendary Cambridge - and fame still before him. Well, he picks it all right back up in the same warm, witty, candid style with The Fry Chronicles (Penguin, £20.00 Srp), a must-read volume that,...

Pahrump - Call it Hof Vegas. Dennis Hof of HBO’s Cathouse no longer wants me to warn readers that his Bunny Ranch empire is in only Reno and not Las Vegas. He’s bringing his style of adult fun to the outskirts of Sin City. He called up the hotline from the middle of Crystal, Nevada to spread the news. The sounds of hammering and drills came from his end of the phone.
“We’re moving around here and getting some things done,” Dennis Hof said. “I bought two 35 year old rundown, rat trap brothels. What you’re buying is the licenses.”
The two old names were Cherry Patch Ranch and Mabel’s Whore House. The new places are Love Ranch and Dennis Hof’s Cathouse. “Those are name that are synonymous with good times.”
There are no good times for the former owner. He got arrested for bribing a county official.

It was with some trepidation that fans entered the 5th season of Doctor Who (BBC, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$89.98 Srp) - Not only were we losing fan-favorite David Tennant as the 10th Doctor, but the 11th Doctor would be the ridiculously young unknown Matt Smith. Surely this would be when the new series stumbled. Well, no. No it didn’t. In fact, Matt Smith is a wonder in the role,...

This week, Shout! Factory releases Mystery Science Theater 3000 Vol. Xix (yes, that's 19), featuring four more classic episodes from the show that made it Ok to talk back to the screen: Devil Doll, Devil Fish, Ed Wood's Bride of the Monster, and Phil Tucker's infamous Robot Monster. A writer for most of the show's run, Mary Jo Pehl (who played the evil Mrs. Forrester during the SyFy run of MST3K), sat down to talk about her history with the cult cable classic as well as her current movie-riffing project Cinematic Titanic, which teams her with MST3K creator Joel Hodgson and fellow show vets Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, and J. Elvis Weinstein on live shows and DVD releases.

Stitch the lip and swap one glove for a puppet as Alexandra Coghlan mumbles through the best ventriloquists on film
There's something reliably disturbing about a ventriloquist act. Third only to taxidermists and gynaecologists among people you'd rather not find sitting next to you at a dinner party, ventriloquists reverse the natural order of things – giving grinning life to what should be inanimate, dead, silent.
Together with taxidermists (and gynaecologists, for that matter) these preternatural puppeteers have spawned a cinematic sub-genre all their own, feeding off our deepest psychoses of identity, or perhaps just exploiting an appealingly perverse avenue for horror.
Uncanny in the truly Freudian sense – at once familiar and deeply alien – a ventriloquist's dummy is the dysfunctional cousin of Chucky and Frankenstein who has yet to cut the paternal apron strings. These ties work both ways; as much as the ventriloquist gives life to his dummy so his dummy takes it from him.

What is by far the most interesting interview I've ever done comes my time spent with one Mr. Mubia Abul-Jama aka Black Devil Doll from the cult hit movie with the same title. Mr. Abul Jama was "kind" enough to let me ask him a few questions all the while I kept looking over my back waiting to be stabbed for some strange reason, one eye in front and one eye in the back if you get my drift jive turkey! If you haven't seen Black Devil Doll I do recommend you checking it out if you like crazy, offensive horror/slasher type movies. Also be sure to check out Mr. Doll's new "weird wobbler" bobble head by Cult Collectibles it has recently come out and in limited supplies. Check out my latest "Versus" with Black Devil Doll.
