The screenplay is based on the historical novel with the same name by Romanian author Mihail Sadoveanu.The novel was first published as a book in 1915, at Editura Minerva.Novelist Sadoveanu died in 19th of October, 1961, during the preproduction of this film.
It's the 5th most watched Romanian film of all times, according to a 2006 study published by the Romanian Filmmakers Union (Uniunea Autorilor Si Realizatorilor De Film din România).
The film received the 1964 Prize for Excellence for the quality of cinematography and ingenuity of camera angles at the Fourth UNIATEC Congres in Milan, Italy.
