The film was saved from deterioration by the "vinegar syndrome" and fully restored in 2002.
Luís Jasmin, who was hired to play the main role of the priest, fell ill two days prior to the beginning of production. Stage actor Paulo José replaced him without any preparation for the role and no previous experience in film acting.
The film was shot in the tiny village of São Gonçalo do Rio das Pedras, in the back-land of the state of Minas Gerais (Southeast Brazil). At the time, the village had no electric lights. The camera batteries had to be recharged in another village many miles away every night.
Film debut of Paulo José.
