The men wear the patches of the 24th infantry division, which did in fact see combat in the early part of the Korean War.
Aldo Ray and L.Q. Jones also appeared in Battle Cry (1955). This was the film where the name of the character "L.Q. Jones" was adopted by Justus E. McQueen making his movie debut. They also appeared together in another war film, The Naked and the Dead (1958).

As of March, 2022 these cast members are still alive - L.Q. Jones and Nehemiah Persoff.
UPDATE: Jones died in July of 2022, age 94, and Persoff in April 2022, age 102.
