Anneli Sauli plays a servant girl called Miriam who starts her work with the Allnes family.Leo Riuttu plays the father Torvald and finds Miriam pretty attractive when he's alone in the big house with her.The mother Britta (Irma Seikkula) doesn't like Miriam too much.Their son Hans, who's a student and visits his home every now and then has feelings for Miriam and she feels the same way.Miriam (1957), a movie William Markus directed and Walentin Chorell wrote the novel this movie's based on, offers some good drama. The actors are good.Pentti Siimes has always done his job well and he doesn't fail this time either.Riuttu and Seikkula are brilliant playing the parents.Anneli Sauli really shines in the leading part. This movie also deals with sexual matters a bit but in the 50's way. They don't show anything. There's only some brief nudity when Hans fantasizes about Miriam. In the modern Finnish movies they often show everything.I think it's not such a good thing. In the old movies it often was only hinting but nothing was said straight. Why don't we go back to that? This movie is a bit of a movie of class differences. What ever Miriam does in the end she's just a servant girl. And the others are above her telling her what to do.Hans is forbidden to see Miriam because she's not at his level. She's just a servant girl and nothing more.
