The Third Avenue El, featured prominently in this film, was closed a couple months before filming began, but demolition had not yet began. That is why no trains are seen are heard on it in this picture.
Towards the end of the film, when three men come into the alley where Ray is lying unconscious, they're seen taking the jelly from a can of Sterno and squeezing it into a cup, then mixing it with a little water. This is a bottom-of-the-barrel concoction for alcoholics called "canned heat", using the flammable content of the product to make a tiny amount of hooch. There are also several references to "sneaky pete" in the film which is another term for any kind of non-commercial alcoholic drink.
