Charles Victor is an unregarded clerk at a private bank. His wife, Marjorie Rhodes, bullies him, his children take him for granted, and his brother-in-law leeches. Every Thursday he takes twenty pounds to Glen Alyn on behalf of one of the partners; she's his ex-girlfriend, and the money is to keep her quiet, lest the partner's rich wife should find out and get upset; Victor's family think he works late at the office. When the police come by to discover everyone's whereabouts on a particular Thursday, they find out about it, but Miss Alyn tells them Victor is visiting her. As a result, Victor gets a reputation as a rake.
