This weekend mirrors, for most like me, the Super Bowl weekend. The big night is on Sunday so all I have to do now is prepare, set up finger food, and mark my ballots for the Academy Awards Sunday night. I don’t expect many people rushing out to see the newest releases like Snitch and Dark Skies. I do see, however, many people either staying home or just going to see Oscar nominated movies. Don’t expect huge numbers.

1994′s Heavenly Creatures turned out to be the little flick that launched some big careers (along with helping turn New Zealand into a movie making mecca), This docudrama pushed director Peter Jackson out into the big studios and all the way to Middle Earth (with several Academy Awards along the way). Another Creatures alum to go home with gold in a few years was Kate Winslet (with a stop on that doomed boat trip that became the second biggest box office hit of all time). And what about poor, young murderess Pauline? I’m speaking of the talented actress that shared the screen with Ms. W. Well, Melanie Lynskey has racked up a lot of screen time ( big and small screen ) since then. Many may know her as Charlie Harper’s stalker-ex in the TV sitcom smash “Two and a Half Men”. Despite having a more positive conclusion than last year’s series, the final of The Block was down slightly on last year, according to preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTam.

However, the winner announcement still rated an excellent 2.715m, which was down slightly on last year’s 3.089m.

The auction part of The Block rated 2.459m, while the grand final rated 2.145m.

Meanwhile, Downton Abbey delivered a solid 1.402m for Seven.

The new Dallas on TNT is a continuation of the primetime soap opera that began in 1978. John Ross (Josh Henderson) and Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe) are fighting over Southfork, just like their fathers (Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy) did back in the CBS days. Others in the cast include Linda Gray, Brenda Strong, Jordana Brewster, and Julie Gonzalo.

"The tragic destiny of the sculptor Camille Claudel will be the focus of Bruno Dumont's seventh feature, which will start shooting next February in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence," reports Fabien Lemercier at Cineuropa, where he notes that "the project has just been selected by Arte France Cinéma which will support it through co-production and pre-acquisitions. For the first time in his career, the director of Outside Satan (unveiled on the Croisette in May) and two-time winner of the Grand Prize at Cannes (in 1999 with Humanity and in 2006 for Flanders) has cast a star: Juliette Binoche (set to be seen next year in Malgorzata Szumowska's Elles, David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis, Sylvie Testud's The Life of Another and Marion Lainé's A Monkey on My Shoulder)."

Lemercier reminds us that when Isabelle Adjani played Claudel for Bruno Nuytten in 1988, she scored a Silver Bear in Berlin, a César and an Oscar nomination. And...

The A-List is setting back gay rights twenty or even thirty years.

This has been a typical meme surrounding the sleeping around, drunken fistfights and generally bad behavior of The A-List crew.
