According to director Matti Kassila, the idea to film Punainen viiva (1959) came from Roland af Hällström, who already had filmed another novel (Ryysyrannan Jooseppi (1955)) by Ilmari Kianto. Punainen viiva (1959) would have been also af Hällströms project, but sadly he died during filming Lain mukaan (1956). So producer Mauno Mäkelä offered the project to Matti Kassila, who took the directorial responsibility although he didn't find the subject of the movie very close to him.
