The 2025 Academy Awards featured its annual In Memoriam segment, honoring industry figures who passed away over the last year. While the tribute recognized film legends such as David Lynch, James Earl Jones, Donald Sutherland, Maggie Smith, Roger Corman, Shelley Duvall, and Bob Newhart, many viewers quickly pointed out names missing from the televised montage.
Morgan Freeman introduced a special remembrance for two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman, who was found dead alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa, last Wednesday. Quincy Jones also received his own tribute later in the show. The rest of the segment, set to Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor, displayed a montage of those the Academy selected for recognition.
Social media reaction grew as fans noted the absence of several well-known actors and filmmakers. Tony Todd, known for his lead role in Candyman, was not featured. Todd, who died in November at 69, was a familiar face in horror,...

The In Memoriam portion of the 2025 Oscars telecast on Sunday night paid a moving tribute to several stars and movie industry folk who have died over the last year, but there were some notable omissions that were quickly pointed out on social media.
The In Memoriam segment of the show, that was soundtracked to the “Lacrimosa” portion of Mozart’s “Requiem in D Minor,” featured moving tributes to entertainment industry giants the likes of David Lynch, Maggie Smith, Roger Corman, Shelley Duvall, Bob Newhart, James Earl Jones and Donald Sutherland. Two-time Oscar-winner Gene Hackman, who was found dead inside his Sante Fe home alongside his wife Betsy Arakawa, was given a moving special tribute by his longtime friend Morgan Freeman.
But as ever with the Academy Awards and the In Memoriam segment, much of the discussion online is who was omitted from the televised tribute. One of the more glaring omissions was actor Tony Todd,...

The John Wick movies thrive on maximalism. It's their secret weapon. Released in 2014, the original "John Wick" appeared to be a revenge thriller built from spare and familiar elements. Instead, director and former "Matrix" stuntman Chad Stahelski, uncredited director David Leitch, and writer Derek Kolstad unleashed a sprawling underground of hitmen, John Alberto Leguizamo running a chop shop, and an underworld-only hotel that forbids assassinations on-site. "John Wick" took its world-building and stylistic excesses farther than unsuspecting audiences could guess. As a result, it was a smash at the box office. It's little wonder that "John Wick: Chapter 2" and "John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum" followed suit, financially and artistically.
Given that, let's look at the "John Wick" movie moments that deliberately took things too far and shifted the needle for the films they occurred in and for action cinema in general. The maximalism of "John Wick" is no longer the exception.

We all know the feeling – you're trying to watch your favourite Netflix show and then your internet suddenly lets you down. The red circle appears and your viewing experience is ruined.
But which internet service provider is the best for streaming Netflix and avoiding the frustrations of buffering time?
Netflix has revealed in a new blog post that the best internet provider for using the service in terms of megabits per second in the UK is Virgin Media (3.96), while BT is just behind (3.63).
TalkTalk (3.34), Sky (3.22) and Ee (3.18) come in third, fourth and fifth place respectively.
In the Us, the top three quickest providers for Netflix streaming are Cox, Cablevision and Verizon FiOS.
It was also revealed that Upc (3.43) is the best provider for Netflix speed in Ireland, just ahead of Magnet (3.34).
Meanwhile, Netflix has introduced a staff benefit that entitles workers to "unlimited" maternity and paternity leave during the first year after birth or adoption.

Sound on Sight undertook a massive project, compiling ranked lists of the most influential, unforgettable, and exciting action scenes in all of cinema. There were hundreds of nominees spread across ten different categories and a multi-week voting process from 11 of our writers. The results: 100 essential set pieces, sequences, and scenes from blockbusters to cult classics to arthouse obscurities.
Shootouts, unlike any other type of action scenes, put death in the forefront of the audience’s mind. Whereas a car chase draws the attention onto the race, or a fight scene onto the pursuit of victory, shootouts test the mortality of our protagonists and anti-heroes. It’s more than just a hail of bullets that matters on screen, it’s who those bullets are clipping down or propping up. Legends can be made in a flurry of lead. The last man standing after the fray isn’t always the best or...

It’s interesting that the titular figure (Keanu Reeves) in John Wick, a visceral and vivid actioner of uncommon simplicity, is presented as the fresh face of a brand-new action franchise when he’s actually a throwback to the unstoppable juggernaut in James Cameron’s The Terminator. That’s not a knock so much as a raised eyebrow aimed at the kinds of characters that directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch and writer Derek Kolstad think modern-day audiences want to watch. And after sitting through the slick and stylish feast of action trash they’ve whipped up, it’s easy to nod your head and acknowledge that they’re onto something.
After all, even though Wick – an ex-assassin who goes back to work when the pig-headed son (Alfie Allen) of New York’s uppermost Russian mob boss (Michael Nyqvist) steals his prized Mustang and brutishly kills the puppy that Wick...

Welcome to Issue 16 of ‘The Marvelous Da7e!’
Real quick mission statement: this column is for discussion of superhero movie news and superhero movies. Titular allegiance aside, this sphere includes non-Marvel properties.
This week: Marvel’s busted into TV and it turns out there’s a bunch to think about.
Bonus: A maybe Giant Thor: The Dark World spoiler.
Though Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is probably safe for a whole season, unless everyone abandons it for something like The Voice on Tuesdays. I don’t want to sound like I’m down on a series that has been a lot of fun and gotten good ratings, but I’m not used to being in the pocket of a show in its freshman year.
Usually I can allow myself to wait until a full season is over before judging if I should pick up a new show from week to week.
