Drawn from an exciting Locarno Pro lineup, these talents – directors, producers and industry execs – impacted at Locarno, and will often in the future. Nine are women, which says a lot about cutting-edge innovation in Europe and beyond.
Despina Athanassiadis, France
Born in France and with Greek roots, Athanassiadis is currently focusing on her Alliance4Development project “The Young One,” about female truck drivers – “It’s a story of transmission, from older to younger generation” – which was awarded script consultancy residency at DreamAgo. “As a filmmaker, I’m interested in people who struggle. I find it fascinating, watching how they find ways to fix their problems. I want to see them on screen,” she states. In her next film, she will focus on a middle-aged French woman, whose life changes forever when she goes to Greece. “It’s a movie with inner and outer journeys, and with lots of international characters.

It was a good day for female filmmakers – and documentaries – at Locarno Pro, with “Mother Vera” by Cécile Embleton and Alys Tomlinson winning the Creativity Media First Look Award on Sunday at Locarno’s pix-in-post competition, dedicated this year to the U.K.
Dedicated to a young Orthodox nun, “Mother Vera” shows her turbulent past and fragile future as she faces inner conflict after 20 years as a monastic.

Alliance 4 Development – a co-development initiative for film projects from Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland hosted by Locarno Pro – is ready to embrace a “variety of genres, themes and visions,” says project manager Francesca Palleschi.
Among 11 titles selected for its 8th edition, emerging filmmakers will be featured alongside their more established colleagues.
“We are proud to support these projects along the path of their development, including several debuts and more than half helmed by female directors,” she adds.
That said, Alliance 4 Development, part of Locarno Pro, headed by Markus Duffner (pictured) features most of the bigger projects being brought to market at Locarno, some bigger-budgeted by European standards.
Ann Oren will bring her unique point of view to “Objet a,” about a couple that, she states, “falls out of sync,” and starts following a mysterious woman with “unusually wild armpit hair.”

“Prince Aden,” a new drama by Italian directing duo Gianluca and Massimiliano De Serio, known internationally for their immigration-themed “Seven Acts of Mercy,” is among projects selected by Locarno’s Alliance for Development initiative.
The platform, now in its 8th year, is geared towards fostering co-productions between France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
Inspired by the book “Partigiani d’Oltremare,” by Italian historian Matteo Petracci, the De Serio twins’ new colonial-era film follows the vicissitudes of a 16-year-old Somali named Aden Sicré who in 1935 becomes a soldier in the Italian army that invaded Ethiopia on Mussolini’s orders. In an unexpected turn, he becomes hailed as a war hero by the Fascist regime. Then a few years later Aden and other African fighters play a pivotal role in the partisan struggle against fascism in Europe.

Greg Garcia is back at it -- this time with The Guest Book, an anthology series centered around a cabin in the woods that different guests visit each week. Though the guest stars (like Jaime Pressly, Jenna Fischer and Michael Rapaport) are consistently hilarious, the story lines only seem to get more outrageous -- a testament to Garcia's incredible imagination and guts to actually write these stories in real guest books in cabins around the country.
Each episode of the 10-part TBS series is based on a real story that Garcia wrote as a way to cure his writer's block while working on My Name Is Earl -- and left to "freak out the next guest." Here, Garcia includes and excerpt from "Entry Eleven," a real story he left behind in a guest book on vacation.

Audiences at the 2016 Locarno Film Festival got used to hearing a familiar statement: “I just saw a Portuguese film.” They were hard to ignore. Fourteen films of some 200 in the lineup were directed or produced by Portuguese people and were distributed across different sections of the festivals. Viewed together, they have a lot to say about the state of a country’s cinema and its ability to wrestle with broad historical concerns.
These included the so-called “blasphemous” biopic of a Lisbon patron saint in João Pedro Rodrigues’ “The Ornithologist” and “Correspondences,” directed by Rita Azevedo Gomes, which focuses on a letter...

Written by Gordon Rennie | Art by Martin Edmond | Published by Titan Comics | Format: Hardback, 128pp
White Trash was originally published way back in 1991 in Blast! Magazine, and you can probably guess the level of cult status it has by the fact that both Tundra and Heavy Metal have had a bash at publishing it also, before Titan Comics have come along and published this new 128 page collection.
White Trash was one of Gordon Rennie’s first ever published scripts, way before his successful time on 2000Ad and Judge Dredd, and was the strip that launched Martin Emond. The art style and anarchic nature almost certainly got him his gigs on the Lobo comics he did at DC.
White Trash is a difficult comic to describe, but ‘anarchic’ is the one phrase that keeps springing to mind. You could either view it as wonderful, over-the-top humour, poking fun at the U.

L’Avventura
Written by Michelangelo Antonioni, Elio Bartolini, and Tonino Guerra
Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni
Italy, 1960
Michelangelo Antonioni’s enigmatic and brilliant L’Avventura is one of the benchmarks for international art cinema, a somewhat disputable designation that was, nevertheless, very much in vogue at the time of its release. Take the 1960 Cannes Film Festival for example, where L’Avventura debuted to one of the event’s most divisive responses, with initially more boos than cheers greeting this affront to conventional film narrative and form. Yet, this was also the year of Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (the Palme d’Or winner), Chukhray’s Ballad of a Soldier, Bergman’s The Virgin Spring, Kalatozov’s Letter Never Sent, and Buñuel’s The Young One, to name just a few of the other titles at the festival, where, ultimately, L’Avventura came away with the Jury Prize (shared with Ichikawa’s...

4. Desire Without Language
Weekend 3 - Jan.24-26th
The fourth chapter of the Harvard-Gulbenkian program stages a unique extended dialogue between Manuela Viegas and Lucrecia Martel, two artists who share a similar ambition to dramatically renew the potential of the cinema as an audio-visual and uniquely sensorial medium. Unseating the long-standing hierarchy of the visual in the cinema, the films of Viegas and Martel are intensely tactile and audio-visual, enriched by complex soundscapes that awaken the invisible, immeasurable space beyond the frame, animating and decentering the dynamically abstract mise-en-scene favored by both filmmakers. Despite their relatively small respective oeuvres—to date Martel has completed three features, Viegas just one—their every film is career defining and milestone. Indeed, with each work Viegas and Martel define a new paradigm of narrative cinema, a different means of reaching far beyond mere representation and story to open the all too often untapped phenomenological...

Indeed, with each work Viegas and Martel define a new paradigm of narrative cinema, a different means of reaching far beyond mere representation and story to open the all too often untapped phenomenological...

Legendary country singer and actress Dolly Parton is making no apologies for her "redneck" background. "We were really redneck, roughneck, hillbilly people. And I'm proud of it," she says in the October issue of Southern Living, on newsstands Sept. 19. "'White trash!' I am. … But I'm proud of my hillbilly, white trash background. That keeps you humble; that keeps you good." Another thing Parton, 68, has no qualms about owning is the plastic surgery she has had over the years. "Well, I never would have said I did it if I hadn't got caught at it," she says. "But I wasn't gonna lie about it!

Over the past 12 years, there have been hundreds of men and women who have competed inside of a Total Nonstop Action ring. Some of these wrestlers were the type you’d like to forget ever worked there like the massive Cheex, Eric Bischoff’s favorite son, Garett Bischoff or the currently employed Rob Terry. Others who have wrestled in Tna possessed incredible talent with plenty of memorable matches to their name like A.J. Styles, Samoa Joe and Christopher Daniels. And then, there were former and future stars that you just don’t remember ever being there.
Many of these wrestlers joined the company before their days on Spike TV, where they were only seen by a fraction of their current audience. Tna started as a $10 a week two hour pay-per-view (same price as an entire month of the WWE Network as Michael Cole would say), then moved to...

"I mean, look at me - I'm a mandingo!" That seemed to be the tipping point in an appearance on Saturday Night Live's most recent "Weekend Update" by Leslie Jones, a new writer on the show. Her riff, titled "No. 1 Slave Draft Pick," started with her congratulating actress Lupita Nyong'o, People magazine's 2014 choice for World's Most Beautiful, then exploded all over the place as she suggested she'd have more luck landing a man if she were a strong, baby-producing slave in the Old South. The sketch quickly fired up controversy, as media pundits weighed in and public outcry erupted on Twitter and social media.

Jenelle Evans may be doing two of the most harmful things a woman could do while pregnant — smoking weed and drinking alcohol! A friend of the Teen Mom 2 star tells RadarOnline.com that, while in Los Angeles on Feb. 10 to tape the show’s reunion special, Jenelle reached out to her and asked her if they could get high together. Making matters worse, another source is claiming that her boyfriend, Nathan Griffith, has been encouraging Jenelle to drink alcohol while pregnant with their first child together.

Melbourne, January 30: Charlotte Hays has branded Jay Z as "a poor excuse for a husband".
The author of 'When Did White Trash Become the New Normal?' said that he wasn't surprised to see the 44-year-old American rapper looking pleased at his wife's "hypersexualised exhibition on stage" because he objectified his own wife on stage, News.com.au reported.
She added that he didn't want to watch the couple's foreplay and that they have "blurred the line between what goes on in their bedroom and what happens on national TV".
Hays claimed that the reason the husband of Beyonce stood smiling and singing as his scantily.

In probably one of the most highly welcomed twitter notices of all time, Dan Harmon confirmed that he will be heading back to care for his cult-favourite television show Community after a year long absence to helm the upcoming Season 5.
As all fans of the show know and for those that have just started to catch up on Community via bittorrent or Netflix (that’s okay, you’re forgiven) – Community is the story of a diverse group of community college students that attend probably the worst college in America; Greendale Community College, school motto E Pluribus Anus and their gender non-specific mascot the Human Being. This is a continuation of my series on Rob Zombie's feature films as a director leading up to the Friday release of his latest effort, The Lords of Salem (Read the first entry Here and the second Here). Today, we consider the fallout Zombie wrought from remaking a seminal film in the horror genre, John Carpenter's Halloween. Halloween With his 2007 Halloween remake, Zombie further confounded expectations and courted perhaps the most controversy and outrage the horror genre had ever seen. John Carpenter's Halloween is considered by its legion of devotees to be a sacrosanct, inviolable masterpiece. Chicago – William Friedkin’s “Killer Joe” is one of the most underrated films of 2012. Sure, it has its fans, but the movie made almost nothing in theaters (around $3.5 million worldwide) and didn’t make enough year-end lists for my tastes. The cast rules, the script from Tracy Letts’ play is stellar, and the design is perfect. If you can handle your noir with a heavy dose of greasy malevolence, it’s a definite rental you’ll want to make.

Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell has been around for an entire decade and has become one of the best selling video game franchises of all time. The series’ strength is in its take on stealth to which it is now unparalleled in this arena having taken the crown from previous reigning champ “Thief” a long time ago.
Now with the franchise’s Seventh game Splinter Cell: Blacklist coming out later this year, it has finally been decided that a film should be made. In truth, this decision is not a new one and was also tried a few years ago with a teaser trailer attached to Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory foretelling of the imminent release, but fell through for a number of reasons. However with Ubisoft signing film deals for some of its major franchises (Assassin’s Creed: The Movie is also gathering up steam) a Splinter Cell film was the obvious next step.
