Tigon’s The Haunted House of Horror (aka Horror House) is a peculiar blend of 1960s camp, teenage angst, and Gothic horror that struggles to find its footing but still manages to intrigue. Directed by Michael Armstrong and starring Frankie Avalon, Richard O’Sullivan, and George Sewell, the film ambitiously sets out to combine youthful rebellion with the chills of a classic haunted house tale.
The story begins with a group of swinging London friends who, in search of thrills, decide to spend a night in an abandoned mansion rumoured to be haunted. What starts as playful banter quickly turns deadly when one of their number is brutally murdered. The group’s paranoia grows as they attempt to solve the mystery,...

One of my favorite things as a kid was whenever different television series would do holiday-themed episodes, especially when it came time to celebrate Halloween in October. A lot of great shows over the years have done an great job of embracing our favorite holiday, and if you’re feeling a bit nostalgic, here’s a collection of Halloween-themed TV specials currently available on Netflix Instant that should help get you guys ready for All Hallows’ Eve.
One Note: There are a handful of entries here that aren’t necessarily Halloween episodes, but they are still shows I love revisiting every October as they perfectly embody the spirit of the season.
American Dad (Season 6, Episode 3)

Between the early 1950s and mid 1980s the Children's Film Foundation was a non-profit making establishment behind dozens of films aimed at a young audience, most of them screening as programme constituents at Saturday morning 'Picture Shows'. I didn't catch many of these during my own childhood. But I do recall a couple of particularly enjoyable ones that I did get to see in the early 1970s: Cry Wolf (1969) and All at Sea (1970), both of which are conspicuously absent from the half dozen or so collections issued on DVD to date. Many of the Cff’s films had a run-time of around an hour, although there were also a number of serials in their catalogue. Masters of Venus was one such production. Comprising eight 15-minute instalments, it arrives on DVD in the UK in a restored release from BFI.

This weekend, when you go to the movies to check out James Wan.s The Conjuring 2 (and you should, because it.s great), you will be reminded . by the film.s opening sequence . that Ed and Lorraine Warren were the paranormal investigators who actually investigated the Amityville Horror house, one of the couple.s most famous cases. Instead of dedicating his entire sequel to the Warren.s Amityville case, Wan uses it to open his film, giving us a glimpse at the atrocities that occurred in that Long Island home. It.s a timely tale, as the actual Amityville house is back on the real estate market. though the realtor has a great reason why you shouldn.t buy it. Good Morning America had a report on the home being for sale, noting that horror aficionados (or people who just want waterfront property outside of New York City) can...

As a horror fan, sometimes you just want to wade in the waters of the absurd and inane. To bath in the bathetic, and wash in the ridiculous. If you’re up for a swim, throw on your trunks and join me for Herbert J. Leder’s It! (1967), a modern retelling of the Golem legend dry humped by Psycho. And if that description piques your interest, take the plunge with me, won’t you?
Produced by Seven Arts Pictures and distributed by Warner Brothers/Seven Arts, It! was released in the UK (where it was filmed) in July of ’67 followed by the U.S. in November. Frequently paired with Leder’s previous film, The Frozen Dead (’66), the U.S. print of It! was in black and white, as opposed to the glorious Eastmancolour on display and as intended. Movies featuring haunted houses aren’t bound to the month of October for their release, but the weeks leading up to Halloween do seem heavy with new ones. It makes sense of course as people planning scary movie nights this month will go looking for fresh blood to terrify themselves and their friends, and haunted houses offer all manner of spooky, creepy and frightening possibilities. Two new films hitting theaters and VOD this Friday start with the idea of a haunted house but move into some varied and disturbing directions. The Canal is about a family who unwittingly move into a home with a bloody past, and when one of them disappears madness and murder aren’t far behind. The Houses October Built follows five friends on a found footage vacation searching for the most harrowing haunted house attractions around, but they might not be all that thrilled with what they find. The Canal...

Sarah looks back at the Amityville films, and finds a lot of scary things, not all of which were intentional…
112 Ocean Avenue, Long Island is probably the most famous haunted house in the world. Not that you’ll necessarily recognise the address – it’s far better known as the Amityville Horror house. Back in 1975, George and Kathy Lutz moved their family into the house… and then 28 days later, they moved back out, claiming to have been driven out by supernatural forces. Their story made the news, was turned into a book, and then made into a movie, in 1979.
It’s hard to imagine now that a family claiming to have encountered the devil in their basement could cause such a massive fuss, but I’m not here to interrogate the truth of their statement. What I am here to do, though, is to watch all of the Amityville Horror movies made to date,...

Apparently we're going back to Haunted Long Island in a new return trip to the Amityville Horror House, something I would describe to you if I wasn't pretty sure you know what it is and/or have access to Google.
This one stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Cameron Monaghan and Bella Thorne and was directed by Franck Khalfoun, the guy who did Maniac, the Elijah Wood serial killer movie. According to Shock Till You Drop it's called Amityville: The Awakening and we'll be seeing it on January 2nd of next year.
This continues a recent pop culture ripple of cases by Ed and Lorraine Warren, following The Conjuring and it's spin-off Annebelle series. Though this film isn't directly connected to them, the real Amityville Haunting was the case that brought the paranormal investigators into the public eye.

Plenty of movies here in the States have of course been inspired by allegedly true paranormal events, from The Amityville Horror to The Conjuring.
A sure sign of the success of such films is when the haunted houses at the center of them become tourist attractions in the wake of their release, which is something that's going on big time over in China this weekend.
As reported by The New York Times, this past Thursday night marked the theatrical release of a film called The House That Never Dies (Jingcheng No. 81), which quickly became a smash hit at the Chinese box office. The 3D horror flick has already pulled in $25.7 million, putting it third on the domestic charts.
Like the aforementioned films before it, The House That Never Dies was based on the real-life legend of a mansion in Beijing known as Chaonei No. 81. According to stories, the house was...

Have you ever heard a parent say, “I’m not especially fond of children, but I love my own!”? That’s kind of how I feel about zombies. So when I got the offer from Blanc/Biehn Productions to make my feature directorial debut, guess what…
Yep: zombies!
If you’ve followed my career as a horror critic, you know that while I try to be as fair and balanced as possible, I’m always at a slight disadvantage when reviewing zombie flicks because they’re my least favorite.
So why, when actress-producer-uberwoman Jennifer Blanc-Beihn and highly imaginative executive producer Lony Ruhmann approached me earlier this year about writing and directing a saucy suspenser based on one of Lony’s loglines – “pinup girls vs. zombies” – did I say yes?

Very few filmmakers are able to tap into an audience’s raw nerve like James Wan. The Malaysian horror director launched the Saw franchise, then spooked audiences with Insidious and The Conjuring. And now Deadline is reporting Warner Bros. has circled a date for a Conjuring sequel: October 23, 2015… just in time for Halloween. The Conjuring followed the real-life case of ghost hunters Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) investigating a haunted house that is tearing a young family apart. As the movie concludes, there is a hint that the next Warrens movie Might explore their work on the Amityville Horror house. (Check out these tantalizing horror facts from our visit to the set.) Although Hammer Films will always be associated with British horror, the studio did have stiff competition. Amicus specialised in the successful horror anthologies and Us counterparts American International Pictures established a permanent UK base in the mid sixties. Other smaller independents took their own bite from the cherry tree of horror with some success, the best known being Tigon Films.
Tigon has received some belated recognition in recent years. Andy Boot’s book on British horror Fragments of Fear devotes a chapter to the company while John Hamilton’s excellent book Beast in the Cellar covers the varied career of Tigon’s charismatic founder Tony Tenser.
Like Hammer’s Sir James Carreras, Tenser was one of the British Film Industry’s great entrepreneurs. Born in London to poor Lithuanian immigrants and a movie fan since childhood, he was an ambitious man with a natural talent for showmanship. Combining shrewd business...

The Welles House in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania is considered to be one of the most haunted houses in America, and so terrifying are the events that have gone down there that it's said to be even more dangerous than the infamous Amityville Horror house. In the late 70s a family moved into the home and were soon thereafter expelled by evil forces, leaving all of their belongings behind. Unexplained noises, bangs, scratches and illnesses were all reported by the family, in addition to nightly visits from a phantom man and the ghost of a young girl.
Now, thanks to modern day technology, you will have the chance to hang out in the haunted Welles House, without leaving your own.
As reported by Virtual Strategy Magazine, ghost hunter Tim Wood purchased the house back in December of last year, and this weekend he and his team are conducting a live 48-hour investigation,...

To say that we are fans of the paranormal here at Dread Central is a bit of an understatement. In fact, I personally cherish a good ghost story. Especially one that is said to be true. Read on for some hellish details regarding The Welles House.

On Saturday, February 15th, the LiveSciFi extreme ghost hunters will be streaming live their investigation of the haunted "Welles House" of Wilkes Barre, Pa. While staying inside the haunted house for 48 hours straight, they will be streaming the paranormal investigation live worldwide via YouTube.
Known as Pennsylvania's own Amityville Horror house, 46 South Welles Street was widely reported in the 70's as being a more dangerous haunting than Amityville. After living in the house for a month in 2013 and being face-to-face with extreme paranormal and demonic activity, Tim Wood [LiveSciFi creator and lead ghost hunter] decided to buy it last December.

If there’s one thing you can say about the Frightfest Halloween All-Nighter it’s that the one-night only event has provided some of the most diverse horror line-ups to be screened theatrically in its meagre seven year existence – and 2013′s line-up is no different, with screenings of the eagerly awaited remake of Aussie horror Patrick, from director Mark Hartley (Not Quite Hollywood, Machete Maidens Unleashed); Soulmate, from actress turned director Axelle Carolyn (Centurion); and the first film from former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash’s new production outfit Slasher Films, Nothing Left To Fear. And as if those weren’t enough, this years retro screening is the awesome, and formerly banned in the UK, Mark of the Devil, from director Michael Armstrong.

The haunted house subgenre has been a horror mainstay for years, and it's alive and well to this day. The Conjuring cleaned up at the box office, proving that audiences are still just as interested in disturbing domiciles as ever. In haunted house films, the location is just as important, if not more so, than the human inhabitants, and as a general rule, the less inviting the house appears on screen, the greater the potential for malady... although as you'll see, that's not always the case. While we wholeheartedly enjoy a good horror film, we would be more than a little reluctant to settle down (or even spend one night) in any of the homes featured in our favorite haunted house flicks. Below, behold eight houses we would most certainly not want to live in... The Freeling's House in Poltergeist As a general rule, building a home atop an occupied...

Part crime drama, part supernatural thriller, part coming of age tale – Joyland is a great ride!
Joyland is centered around college student Devin Jones, while spending the summer as a greenie at the Joyland amusement park. While working at Joyland, with it’s eccentric cast of characters, Dev and company investigate the horrible tragedy of Linda Gray’s murder on the Horror House ride.
It’s a whodunit story providing more than that. As a reader you seem more invested in the everyday relationships of all of the characters and less anxious to uncover the mystery. The “carny” language adds depth to the story and immerses the reader into the amusement park atmosphere of the 1970’s.
Joyland has a lot of heart – unusual for traditional crime thriller novels. With a number of twists, turns, plots and subplots – it keeps you guessing until the end.

Joyland has a lot of heart – unusual for traditional crime thriller novels. With a number of twists, turns, plots and subplots – it keeps you guessing until the end.

There’s a certain flavor to Stephen King’s 1970s novels that goes deeper than theme and tone and even feel, especially in the smaller, more personal stories like The Shining and ’Salem’s Lot and The Dead Zone. The books are certainly “of their time,” but it’s more than that: it’s a distinct spirit that’s difficult to pin down and even harder to describe. These books – as well as the Bachman novel Blaze, a relic from those early days – come from such a distinct time, place, and mindset in King’s career that the stories can’t help but reflect who and where their author was when they were written. Cheese aficionados and wine connoisseurs call this elusive essence terroir. At this late date, decades after those classic novels were published, it would be almost impossible to capture that exact flavor again, in a new novel...

While slasher cinema owes a stylistic debt to Bob Clark's 1974 classic Black Christmas, it was John Carpenter's 1978 masterpiece Halloween that kicked the genre into overdrive, with dozens of productions and studios stumbling all over each other to get a piece of the slasher pie. One low-budget entry unfairly labeled a Halloween knock-off is Ulli Lommel's 1980 film The Boogeyman – a fascinating, stylish and entertaining little flick that I think deserves more love than it tends to get. Lommel began his film career as an actor and protégé of legendary German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who produced Lommel's acclaimed 1973 film The Tenderness of Wolves – a psychodrama based on the real-life exploits of serial killer Fritz Haarmann. Lommel's cinematic fascination with serial killers would continue much later in his career... but I'll get to that later. After directing a couple of oddball art films, Lommel took the helm of The Boogeyman,...

With the horror genre in an obvious slump -- and so many other horror Web sites oohing and aaahing over the latest casting announcements from upcoming horror remakes -- it seemed like a good time for ESplatter to look back in time at some of the memorable -- but sadly unjustly forgotten -- splatter movies that remain unavailable in the U.S. after all these years. 1969's "Haunted House of Horror" (review here) was produced by Tigon -- who put together a number of other forgotten out-of-print horror films, including "The Beast in the Cellar" and "Blood on Satan's Claw". In this 1969 release, Frankie Avalon suffers one of the most gruesome deaths captured in a late 1960s movie -- yes, a knife to the balls. A bad movie all around, "Horror House" (aka "The Haunted House of Horror") gets chilling during its last half hour and actually delivers some very memorable scares.
