One of the main characters is the mysterious poet nicknamed "Pasquino", who, according to popular tradition, wrote satires attacking famous figures of Papal Rome. The tradition to attach to statues anonymous criticisms aimed at public figures really existed for many years in Rome: one of those statues, among the most used, was indeed nicknamed Pasquino, and the anonymous messages "Pasquinate".
The film begins only with a long prologue composed of a musical soundtrack and a black screen during 2 minutes and 48 seconds, until the first image displaying credits appears.
