- Somerset debuted as a daytime drama, revolving around the powerful conglomerate Delaney Brands and its effect on the fictional community of Somerset, Illinois. Two years into its run, the serial was transformed into a crime-laden melodrama similar to CBS's "The Edge of Night". For the next four years, newspaper publisher Julian Cannell took center stage as Somerset was besieged by arson, blackmail, extortion, and murder.—Mark Faulkner <mtfalknr@cc.memphis.edu>
- Eve Lawrence, arriving as the fiancee and on the arm of Judge Bradley Bishop, caused quite a stir. Eve was at least twenty years younger than the Judge and brought with her a teenage daughter named Heather, who instantly fell in love with handsome young Greg Mercer, son of the recently arrived Mark and Edith Mercer. Eve and Mark knew each other from years ago when Eve was married to Ken Lawrence. Eve and Mark had an affair and Heather was really Mark's biological daughter not Eve's late husband's. As the romance between Heather and Greg continued to grow, the truth of Heather and Greg being half brother and sister came out. They immediately broke off and Eve's engagement to the Judge ended. After Mark and Edith left Somerset, Eve became involved with the handsome, charismatic Julian Cannell. Eve and Julian had a deep passion for each other but Eve was unable to fully commit to Julian. His needs were finally met with Kate Thornton, who wanted Julian for herself. When Eve and Julian were set to reunite, Kate told Julian she was pregnant. Eve and Julian broke up and Eve eventually married rich Ned Paisley and flew off to Paris to live with him forever. Julian, in the meantime, married Kate, whose lie about being pregnant and the cover up thereafter eventually caused her to have a nervous breakdown and be institutionalized. Julian then fell into a romance with the deeply equally troubled Victoria Paisley.—James Sullivan
