By 2011, the Planet of the Apes series had already been around for over 40 years, but Rise of the Planet of the Apes completely revolutionized the franchise. The first Planet of the Apes movie was released in 1968 and mesmerized audiences all over the world. The ending of Planet of the Apes is still regarded as one of the best twists in movie history. After the success of the 1968 original, four more Planet of the Apes movies were made before the franchise was eventually rebooted in 2001.
The 2001 Planet of the Apes reboot was not received well by critics or audiences, and led to the franchise being deemed as dead once again for 10 years. Therefore, 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes had a lot of factors working against it. However, Rise's emotional story about Caesar quickly won over both critics and audiences, and has led to several more successful Planet of the Apes movies.

Ever since King Kong swatted biplanes from the top of the Empire State Building in 1933, hairy creatures have occupied a place of honor in the cinematic pantheon. And in many cases, the Academy has recognized that fact: The original “King Kong” was shamefully overlooked at the Oscars, but the second-ever special award for makeup was given out in 1968 to “Planet of the Apes” — and the first time the award existed as a regular competitive category, the winner was Rick Baker for “An American Werewolf in London,” with subsequent winners including “Quest for Fire” (hairy cavemen!), “Harry and the Hendersons” (Bigfoot!), “The Wolfman” (another werewolf!) and, um, “Frida” (unibrow!).
On the visual effects side, meanwhile, the “Kong” successor “Mighty Joe Young” won in 1949, Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” remake won in 2005 and the rebooted “Planet of the Apes” series won in… Oh, wait, it shockingly never won, though its astonishing motion-capture...

Few franchises have left as deep a mark on the science fiction genre as Planet of the Apes, with films like Escape from the Planet of the Apes standing the test of time. This series not only introduced audiences to engaging, thought-provoking themes about society and human nature but also revolutionized the art of sci-fi filmmaking. Even though the recent reboot has been gaining widespread acclaim, many people overlook the franchise's more humble roots. The legacy of Planet of the Apes traces back to its original films, where the franchise's groundbreaking storytelling and poignant social commentary were first crafted.
Escape from the Planet of the Apes stands out as a crucial piece of the puzzle. It preserves and builds upon the original film's rich thematic foundation while abandoning the obscenely bizarre and bleak elements of Beneath the Planet of the Apes. The modern Planet of the Apes movies differentiate themselves from the originals by using groundbreaking CGI technology for realistic portrayals of apes. The new era of Planet of the Apes films has pushed the boundaries of visual effects in Hollywood, creating stunningly realistic ape characters. Rise of the Planet of the Apes successfully revitalized the franchise through its innovative use of CGI technology and outstanding performances.

The Planet of the Apes franchise consists of four different continuities, including the original pentalogy, a 2001 remake, a reboot trilogy, and the 2024 film. The original timeline features a complex story where apes rule and humans are slaves, ending with a reveal that the planet is actually a post-apocalyptic Earth. The Caesar timeline begins with the escape of characters from Earth to the past, leading to an alternate history with Caesar leading an ape uprising for equality.
The complete Planet of the Apes timeline is actually made up of four separate continuities established over the course of the entire franchise. To date, the Planet of the Apes movie franchise spans over 55 years and includes the original pentalogy, a 2001 remake directed by Tim Burton, a reboot trilogy starring Andy Serkis as Caesar, and the 2024 film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. I love me some damn dirty apes, and I’m not alone. Ever since the first Planet of the Apes movie in 1968, it’s been one of Hollywood’s most consistent (on a quality level) franchises. Think about it. Has there ever really been a lousy Planet of the Apes movie? Not really. Yet, it’s often unheralded when we talk about the great franchises. So, let’s look at the series as a whole, with this Planet of the Apes movies ranked list (from worst to best). And don’t worry – you’ll get to have your say tomorrow with a poll I’ll be publishing, so check back for that.

20th Century Studios gave the Maze Runner trilogy director Wes Ball’s addition to the Planet of the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (read our review Here), a digital release earlier this month, and the 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD release is scheduled for August 27th – but before we get there, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will begin streaming on the Hulu service as of August 2nd! All nine prior films in the series are also streaming on Hulu, so fans will have the chance to binge-watch the entire Planet of the Apes franchise there!
The story of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set many years after the conclusion of War for the Planet of the Apes. Many apes societies have grown from when the Moses-like Caesar brought his people to an oasis, while humans have been reduced to a feral-like existence.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes is the lowest-grossing film in the franchise, making just $8 million. Rise of the Planet of the Apes rebooted the franchise successfully, exceeding box office expectations and leading to a profitable sequel. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes stands out as the most profitable installment in the franchise, earning $710 million worldwide.
Following the release of the original film in 1968, Planet of the Apes has become one of the highest-grossing franchises of all time. The first film starring Charlton Heston is a science-fiction classic and led to four sequels releasing in the 1970s Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, and Battle for the Planet of the Apes. In 2001, a remake of the original, starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Tim Burton, was released.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes raised the bar for the franchise with a complex narrative and character development. The sequels, War and Kingdom, continued to elevate the franchise with intense, gut-wrenching stories. A Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sequel could be the "Dawn" of a new trilogy, building on themes and characters.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes came out 10 years ago in July 2014, and it has been my favorite Planet of the Apes movie ever since. There have been 10 Planet of the Apes movies since the inception of the franchise in 1968, not to mention all the comic books and other expanded universe materials. While not every Planet of the Apes film is set in the same continuity, the series is widely considered one of the best sci-fi franchises of all time. 2024 marked the beginning of a new chapter in the saga following the prequel trilogy.

Science fiction cinema came of age in the 1950s, beginning an ascent out of the drive-in schlock market that culminated in the boldly experimental yet still commercially viable efforts of the 1960s. That fed directly into the next decade, with sci-fi in the 1970s taking on (for the most part) the same subversive attitude as most other movies made during that era.
But sci-fi movies also entered blockbuster territory in the ‘70s as demonstrated by the massive success of films like Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman: The Movie, Logan’s Run, and Alien. The studios realized that sci-fi could be a cash cow, and as the 1980s dawned, decided to ramp up their genre output, not to mention their budgets, with elaborate visual effects, bigger stars, and more action—even if some of the more cerebral concepts espoused in the earlier decades’ films took a bit of a back seat.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sets the stage for a new trilogy, leaving behind weird classic storylines. The modern series likely won't include mutants with psychic powers or ape-themed puns like the originals. Avoiding complex surgeries and Earth destruction, the modern movies aim for a grounded, realistic tone.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has finally brought the modern Planet of the Apes movie series back, but these 10 storylines from the classic Planet of the Apes films are far too weird for the modern movies. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes brought things one step closer to the original movie through its time jump and a few other changes, but it still maintains the grounded tone of the modern trilogy. Because of this, it will be really difficult to integrate some elements from the classic Planet of the Apes movies, such as these 10 storylines.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sets up a sequel where Caesar may return, potentially through time travel. The film hints at an Escape from the Planet of the Apes remake, focusing on ape-human coexistence and space travel. By introducing time travel, the movie remakes key details from the original series, creating a new causal loop.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has proven that War for the Planet of the Apes may not be the last time that Caesar is seen alive, with the film setting up a strange way to bring him back in the sequel. Caesar was the main character in the modern Planet of the Apes trilogy, but due to his death in the third film as well as the 300-year time jump, he isn't seen alive in the newest movie. However, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes 2 may be able to bring Caesar back.

Human characters in the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy never returned, making Mae's potential return a game-changer for the franchise. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the 10th and latest entry in the 56-year-old science fiction film series, made more than $58 million at the box office in its opening weekend. Who knew that French author Pierre Boulle’s slim, satirical 1963 novel, Le Planete des Singes, would lead to one of the most successful science fiction franchises of all time? Consisting of 10 films (to date), two TV series , comic books (including a magazine series from Marvel), toys, games, merchandise and more, Planet of the Apes remains one of the most enduring and unique sci-fi sagas in cinematic history.
The success of the original film, 1968’s Planet of the Apes, led studio 20th Century Fox (which finally made the movie after years of development and stalling) to launch a series of sequels. That wasn’t necessarily unheard of back then, but those sequels—which include Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)—told one complete story, unlike anything done on film before.

It's been 7 years since "War of the Planet of the Apes" brought to an end the story of Caesar the first ape capable of speech, who led a revolution and forever changed the world. Now, we're entering a new chapter in the "Planet of the Apes" saga with "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," set generations after the events of the previous film.

In 1968's "Planet of the Apes," astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) and his companions find themselves traveling from 1972 to the year 3978 during their voyage, initially assuming they've traveled through space as well as time. Famously, Taylor finds this assumption woefully incorrect, discovering that a malfunctioning spacecraft took him right back to his point of origin: an Earth, but 2,006 years in the future, where humanity has all but destroyed itself with nuclear war, and a race of sentient apes have risen to become the world's dominant species.
While that original film has arguably been surpassed in quality by its subsequent sequels and the modern reboot saga, its cultural impact cannot be matched; everything from its visual iconography and immortal twist ending is firmly ingrained within pop culture. The Planet of the Apes franchise includes ten films, with some good and some bad, making it fascinating to rank. The more recent movie trilogy acts as a prequel, extending the franchise beyond Caesar's story. Matt Reeves' sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, is considered the greatest entry in the franchise due to strong characters and social commentary.
In the fifty years since its 1968 debut, the Planet of the Apes franchise has remained one of the most complex, thought-provoking franchises in film. Its obvious resonances with racial tension and societal prejudice have always made the franchise relevant. The franchise includes ten films in total. 1968's Planet of the Apes gave way to a total of five films and was also remade in 2001 by Tim Burton. With the franchise comprising a vast array of films, some good and some bad, it makes for a fascinating set of films to rank.

Ever since Charlton Heston climbed out of a little rocket ship in the toxic waters of the Forbidden Zone, science fiction has never been the same. The film in which he starred was based on a Pierre Boulle novel, but by the time it reached the big screen, it felt like an epic cinematic version of The Twilight Zone (and it had the Rod Serling writing credit to prove it).
The ending of the film is still one of the all-time great “twists” in cinema history, birthing the first modern science fiction franchise. And it’s never let up since. When Wes Ball’s latest installment in this upside down universe, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, hits big screens this coming weekend, the series will have seen nearly a dozen films released over the span of about 60 years. The Complete ‘Planet of the Apes’ Guide To Help You Watch The Films Before ‘Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Release (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Tim Burton’s attempt at rebooting the renowned sci-fi “Planet of the Apes” film franchise that took the world by storm in the early and late 70’s was unsuccessful. However, the complete reboot of the series in 2011 did what Burton was unable to do. The franchise was back in action and was stronger than ever with a better budget, action, and graphics (CGI was preferred this time instead of costumes).
The original “Planet of the Apes” was a pentalogy based on a French novel called “La Planète des singes.” It spanned over 6 years, with a continuously decreasing budget for each film — the franchise gained massive traction despite that.

Marvel's Beware the Planet of the Apes revitalized the franchise's original continuity, expanding the geography and mythology in fresh ways, while offering crucial ties to the 1968 film, subtle as some of them might be. The prequel series gives new context to pivotal scenes in the first Apes movie, offering unique insights into the actions of its characters, including Zira, Cornelius, and Nova. Marvel's Beware miniseries hints at future stories within the original continuity, while acknowledging that the timeline has a hard limit: the ending of 1970's Beneath the Planet of the Apes.

Beware the Planet of the Apes introduces new survivors of the original 1968 movie, setting them up as the franchise's latest time travelers. A group of mutant humans have their own rocket and know disaster is coming, suggesting they survive the second movie's apocalypse and can then change (or even fracture) the timeline. Uniting the different continuities only enhances the franchise's core message - apes and humans being trapped in a violent cycle until they can evolve beyond the need for supremacy.
A major new twist in Planet of the Apes lore just set the stage to unite its four different cinematic continuities. The move is in its fledgling state, but a new story set just before the events of the 1968 Charlton Heston movie introduces a set of new time travelers who could be the genesis for the 2011 Rise of the Planet of the Apes reboot.

"Planet of the Apes" has consistently been a science-fiction franchise (and one of the best we have), but the movies come in different sci-fi flavors. The original was a time travel story (even if Charlton Heston's lead George Taylor took the long way around via cryogenesis), culminating in the shocking ending right out of "The Twilight Zone" where Taylor discovers the shattered Statue of Liberty and realizes this ape-ruled world was Earth all along.
The third movie, "Escape from the Planet of the Apes," saw the talking apes travel back to the 1970s when humans reigned. Subsequent films filled in the timeline, depicting the uprising that led to the planet of the apes. The new films (the so-called Caesar trilogy) have done the reverse, starting at the beginning and taking the route of contemporary speculative fiction. As a brief prologue, we must remind ourselves how Rotten Tomatoes works. When a critic submits a written review to the Rt aggregate, they are asked to deem that review either "fresh" or "rotten." The critic typically gets to make the distinction, meaning a 2.5-star review can be either positive or negative, based on who is submitting it. It's based on pass/fail grades. Rotten Tomatoes will then create a percentage of "positive" reviews. If 60% or more of the submitted reviews are positive, the film is deemed "fresh." If 59% or fewer are positive, it's "rotten."
If a film has, say, a 73% approval rating, it doesn't mean that every critic gave it a 73 out of 100. It only means that 73% of the submitted reviews are positive.
All that said, some films receive such low approval ratings that one might be able to draw some logical conclusions about the film being rated. A...

In 1971, just six years after Frank Herbert published his groundbreaking science-fiction novel "Dune," Arthur P. Jacobs' Apjac International obtained the rights to the story for a film adaptation. The producer behind "Planet of the Apes" was ready to craft another world set in a distant future, but with the sequel film "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" on its way, "Dune" was delayed.
Jacobs went through a handful of different directors and screenwriters in early development, but he tragically passed away in 1973. David Lynch would eventually bring "Dune" to the big screen in 1984, but there were multiple failed attempts that paved the way for his film and a remake in his wake that led to Denis Villeneuve's recent adaptations. The messy histories of failed "Dune" adaptations could justify their own feature-length documentaries but allow this to be a crash course on the bizarre "Dune" movies that never came to be.

Marvel's Beware the Planet of the Apes #2 introduces a creative solution to give Nova a voice, as a telepathic mutant is able to imprint language in her mind. The inclusion of panels from Marvel's adaptation of Beneath the Planet of the Apes in Beware the Planet of the Apes #2 ties the comic series tightly into the existing lore of the film franchise's original continuity, while also potentially setting up the series to diverge from the original canon. Giving Nova a voice restores her true humanity and allows for stories that highlight her individual agency through internal narration, while also potentially setting up a renewed romantic story with astronaut Taylor.
In the lead up to its Beware the Planet of the Apes miniseries, Marvel promised that it would reveal the untold backstory of Nova, the future human woman from 1968's original Apes film, who the movie depicted as unable to communicate using spoken language.

Mickey Gilbert, the fearless stunt performer who jumped off a cliff for Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and doubled for Gene Wilder in films including Blazing Saddles, Silver Streak and The Frisco Kid, has died. He was 87.

The original ending of Planet of the Apes revealed that Nova was pregnant with Taylor's child, but this was cut from the film before the scene was shot. Nova's pregnancy was objected to by Charlton Heston, who played Taylor, causing the scene to be removed from the movie. The inclusion of Nova's pregnancy could have drastically changed the trajectory of the franchise, had it resulted in a different plot, or at least different ending, for the 1970 sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes.

Franklin J. Schaffner's 1968 sci-fi classic "Planet of the Apes," written by Michael Wilson and Rod Serling, is a perfectly wicked political satire set in a distant, distant future on a distant, distant planet wherein human-like beings live as mute brutes and apes have evolved into the dominant rulers of the planet. The planet is discovered by a group of Earth astronauts who flew through some sort of time vortex while in the outer cosmos, and their leader, the stalwart Taylor (Charlton Heston), finds himself having to prove to the planet's own apes that humans are indeed capable of speech and thought.
In one of the best-known twist endings in cinema history, the film ultimately reveals that the planet of the apes was Earth all along. Taylor discovers a millennia-old Statue of Liberty on a distant beach, realizing that humans destroyed themselves in a nuclear conflagration and that apes evolved in their place.

Marvel's Planet of the Apes Will Kill Off [Spoilers] To Save Franchise Continuity (Theory Explained)
Marvel could reset the Planet of the Apes continuity for its new comic book era, and the best way to do that would be by killing off Taylor and erasing the events of the original four sequels. Rewriting Taylor's death would allow Marvel to pursue new narrative possibilities and diverge the continuity from the first film. Taylor should be used as a destabilizing element in Ape society, playing a crucial role before being disposed of to allow the franchise to move forward.
Marvel has returned to the original Planet of the Apes film continuity, with a prequel set immediately before the events of the 1968 film – but while the miniseries seems to be leading directly into the arrival of Charleton Heston's character Taylor on the ape-inhabited future Earth, the series could instead be heading for a massive swerve. By killing off Taylor early, Marvel could set up its own Apes continuity.

Marvel's new Planet of the Apes miniseries is a prequel, but in the future, the company could establish its own continuity separate from the film series. Beware the Planet of the Apes #1 reintroduces Zira, Cornelius, and the ape civilization familiar to fans of the franchise, while setting the stage for conflict with a newly revealed ape settlement. Marvel has the opportunity to break free from the franchise's fixation on the past and explore the future of the timeline in a new and exciting way.
Marvel's latest Planet of the Apes miniseries is a prequel to the original 1968 movie, continuing a trend that comic book incarnations of the franchise seem unable to break free from. That said, it appears possible that Marvel could be using the current series to establish their own alternate continuity, distinct from the film series.

By now, "Planet of the Apes" fans have made peace with the fact that, despite representing one of the longest-running and widely influential franchises ever made, these simian stories aren't typically considered a frontrunner for the best or most successful franchises in cinema history. The spotlight inevitably goes to more traditional picks, and it's easy to figure out why. The "Apes" movies don't have a sexy "hook" compared to most others, opting for a much nerdier, more thoughtful, and eminently pessimistic approach to sci-fi. Those of us who'd consider ourselves initiated in this club, however, would say those are the fundamental reasons that make "Planet of the Apes" so great and so idiosyncratic, at the same time.
Then again, maybe the relatively insular nature of the series can be explained elsewhere. For obsessives like ourselves, much of the "Apes" appeal is that the unique property can't resist thoroughly downer endings,...

1968's "Planet of the Apes" is one of the most legendary sci-fi movies in cinematic history. Co-written by Rod Serling of "The Twilight Zone" fame and directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, it spawned a franchise that is still going strong to this day.
It all started, however, with the story of astronauts landing on a mysterious planet filled with intelligent apes, only to discover that they were actually on Earth in the distant future. Led by Charlton Heston, the film boasted an incredible cast — not to mention some legendary practical makeup effects that helped bring the apes to life. Unfortunately, when a film is more than 50 years old, not many people from the cast are going to be around any longer. Luckily, a couple of key cast members are indeed still here to help keep the legacy alive.

The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes trailer suggests that the upcoming movie will not revisit the iconic Statue of Liberty scene from the original 1968 film. The franchise is now in a position to remake the classic films, but the trailer hints that it may instead focus on the later installments of the original run. A modern take on the Statue of Liberty moment would be difficult to do well, as it is one of the defining images of 20th-century cinema. The reboot franchise has always struck a different tone and told its own original story.
The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes trailer implies that the upcoming movie has no interest in revisiting the most famous Planet of the Apes moment. Now that the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy has wrapped up, the franchise is finally in a position to depict a full-on ape planet. The...
