- San Francisco Police Commissioner Stewart "Mac" McMillan and his amateur detective wife keep their marriage unpredictable while solving the city's most baffling crimes.
- Attorney and US Navy vet Stewart "Mac" McMillan is appointed Commissioner of Police for the city of San Francisco. He often handles the highest-profile cases personally. Helping him out on many of them is his wife Sally, whose father was a detective for the SFPD. In fact, Sally gets so involved that she often puts herself in harm's way. They are often assisted by Mac's loyal but somewhat inept assistant Sgt. Charlie Enright and their hard-drinking, smart-mouthed live-in maid Mildred. Sadly, a few years after Mac's appointment Sally dies in a plane crash. Also, Mildred quits her position and is replaced by her scatterbrained sister Agatha, and in later years Enright is promoted to lieutenant.—Brian Washington <Sargebri@att.net>
- Stewart MacMillan, defense attorney and former officer in Navy intelligence, is the appointed Police Commissioner in San Francisco of the early 1970s. A former ladies' man in his 40s, Mac is rugged, handsome, and married to Sally, an attractive and imaginative, slightly-neurotic woman in her mid-20s. The daughter of a late SFPD detective and a wise but kooky socialite, Sally is always alert when other women give her husband the eye--which is often. The MacMillans are crazy about each other and trade sexual banter, occasionally move with the social set, and solve crime. With Mac's prosaic, plodding partner Sgt. Enright and their tippling, wiseacre housekeeper Mildred, they tackle many of the city's more unique crimes.—LA-Lawyer

- In the late 1960s, Navy veteran and attorney Stuart McMillan is named Commissioner of the SFPD. In this capacity he becomes involved in a series of criminal investigations to a degree unusual for a police commissioner. He is frequently aided by his wife Sally, a mystery buff who is well-meaning but inexperienced, though able to prove herself. Also assisting Commissioner McMillan are his partner, Sgt. Charles Enright, and Sally's lifelong housekeeper Mildred. Sgt. Enright previously worked for a private detective agency and thus gained the experience needed to join the police force. He is outstanding in his loyalty but often ineffective. Mildred is known for her tart tongue and love of drink.—anne0
