This series was quickly put together in order to replace Griffith's series Headmaster (1970) which was low-rated. It premiered one week after the final episode of "Headmaster" in the same time slot.
Although Griffith's character is named Andy Sawyer instead of Taylor, this series is a continuation of The Andy Griffith Show (1960). In the first episode, Don Knotts, George Lindsay, and Paul Hartman reprise their roles from the previous series. (Knotts' character is not addressed by name.)
