However, that structure, which is more normal across the pond, is now becoming the standard in the States as well. The Disney+ "Star Wars" murder mystery series "The Acolyte" received decent reviews from the critics, but as its somewhat abysmal 19% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes proves, the fandom didn't exactly embrace the show. While the series' High Republic setting could have been a gold mine for "Star Wars," the fan reception and the show's cancellation after a single season mean that we might not get to revisit the era on screen any time soon. Surely, all of this means that "The Acolyte" will go down as a disastrous failure that no one watched, right?

Not quite so. On the contrary, the 2024 year-end film & TV report by entertainment industry data analysis company Luminate has revealed some interesting numbers about "The Acolyte." As it turns out, the show was not only the most-viewed "Star Wars" project of 2024, but it was also the year's second most viewed Disney+ series at an impressive 2.7 billion minutes.

The entertainment world had a challenging 2024, with TV production still struggling to recover from the disruptions caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Luminate’s latest report highlights just how much the industry is still feeling the impact, with fewer shows and episodes being produced than ever before.

However, Percy Jackson and the Olympians stood out as Disney+’s biggest win of the year, racking up over 3 billion minutes viewed.

The streaming giant faced a tough year otherwise, with major franchises like Marvel and Star Wars falling short of expectations. Marvel’s Agatha All Along and Echo couldn’t match earlier series, while The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video saw a 60% drop compared to its first season.

Despite this, franchises like these were still the top performers for platforms like Disney+, showing how much weight they carry, even when underwhelming.

Production-wise, streaming platforms are still cutting back.

As great as it is to see a lot of sci-fi and fantasy shows rising up in the last few years, there's always the risk of some series ending sooner than expected. 2024 saw a lot of shows axed, many after just one year. Episode 9, which premiered the same night, had 3.9 million views on its first day. Disney calls the last two episodes a “two-part finale,” and while Episode 9 is slightly behind the previous two in views, it may catch up over the weekend.

When Disney shared Episode 7’s 4.2 million views, it noted a 35% jump from the series premiere, which puts Episode 1 at about 3.1 million first-day views.

Episodes 8 and 9 show even more growth, with Episode 8 up by 48% and Episode 9 up by 26% over the premiere.

Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians has found its Thalia Grace. Tamara Smart (Resident Evil) has joined the season two cast as a recurring guest star, playing Zeus’ daughter.

Tamara Smart has been cast as Thalia in the Disney+ series. Smart will appear in the recurring guest star role alongside series regulars Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Charlie Bushnell, Dior Goodjohn, and Daniel Diemer. Variety recently exclusively reported that Timothy Simons will appear in Season 2 as Tantalus.

Walt Disney Studios held the 2024 D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif., hyping fans with what the company has to offer over the next few months.

During the event, the company unveiled the official trailer for Agatha All Along and presented its lead star, Kathryn Hahn, who performed "The Ballad of Witches' Road" alongside other cast members, including Aubrey Plaza, Ali Ahn, Debra Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone, Joe Locke and Sasheer Zamata.

The series, which premieres on Disney+ on September 18, follows the events that happened on WandaVision.
