For most of American television history, viewers could expect long-running shows to release new episodes incredibly frequently. I Love Lucy, for instance, never had even six months off the air between seasons. The same can be said for other top shows throughout the decades, which aired a new season air every year on a fairly strict September-through-May schedule.
This regularity is precisely why American fans joked about how long they had to wait for new seasons of Sherlock when it was airing, as the two-year gaps seemed excruciatingly long. However, that structure, which is more normal across the pond, is now becoming the standard in the States as well. It doesn't seem to matter how many episodes are in the series or what genre it is; new seasons of TV are taking a long time to make.

The Disney+ "Star Wars" murder mystery series "The Acolyte" received decent reviews from the critics, but as its somewhat abysmal 19% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes proves, the fandom didn't exactly embrace the show. While the series' High Republic setting could have been a gold mine for "Star Wars," the fan reception and the show's cancellation after a single season mean that we might not get to revisit the era on screen any time soon. Surely, all of this means that "The Acolyte" will go down as a disastrous failure that no one watched, right?
Not quite so. On the contrary, the 2024 year-end film & TV report by entertainment industry data analysis company Luminate has revealed some interesting numbers about "The Acolyte." As it turns out, the show was not only the most-viewed "Star Wars" project of 2024, but it was also the year's second most viewed Disney+ series at an impressive 2.7 billion minutes.

The entertainment world had a challenging 2024, with TV production still struggling to recover from the disruptions caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Luminate’s latest report highlights just how much the industry is still feeling the impact, with fewer shows and episodes being produced than ever before.
However, Percy Jackson and the Olympians stood out as Disney+’s biggest win of the year, racking up over 3 billion minutes viewed.
The streaming giant faced a tough year otherwise, with major franchises like Marvel and Star Wars falling short of expectations. Marvel’s Agatha All Along and Echo couldn’t match earlier series, while The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video saw a 60% drop compared to its first season.
Despite this, franchises like these were still the top performers for platforms like Disney+, showing how much weight they carry, even when underwhelming.
Production-wise, streaming platforms are still cutting back.

As 2025 dawns, fans of several sci-fi and fantasy shows may be worried about incoming cancellations!
As great as it is to see a lot of sci-fi and fantasy shows rising up in the last few years, there's always the risk of some series ending sooner than expected. 2024 saw a lot of shows axed, many after just one year. That includes highly anticipated series like The Acolyte, Dead Boy Detectives and more. The same could happen in 2025, with several shows potentially on the chopping block.
Some are obvious due to lower viewership. Others may be huge and seemingly successful, but various factors could work against them. Here are 15 genre shows in danger of getting canceled this year.

Rick Riordan recently had a chance to check out the early cuts of the first two episodes for Percy Jackson & The Olympians Season 2, and he’s really impressed. According to him, the episodes are already looking ‘amazing.’
One thing that stands out to Riordan is the increased focus on Clarisse Larue, a character who plays a bigger role this season, just like in the Sea of Monsters book. Fans of the books will recognize her as an important character, and it looks like the show is doing her justice.
The actress playing Clarisse, Dior Goodjohn, has caught Riordan’s attention with her performance. He mentioned that she has really brought her ‘A game‘ this season. He’s excited for viewers to see what she’s been doing. Riordan’s praise suggests that her portrayal of Clarisse is a major highlight of the new season.

Is it possible for a franchise to be both underrated and wildly beloved? When it comes to literature for kids and middle grade readers, the answer is a clear "yes." A few massive pop cultural flashpoints aside, modern kid lit seems to be full of super-popular titles that earn millions of young fans but barely register on the radar of adults. Rick Riordan's "Camp Half-Blood Chronicles" appears to be one of these. The books, which center on the sassy son of Poseidon, Percy Jackson, and the friends and rivals he meets at a camp for demigods, have more than 180 million copies in print, according to Disney. However, if you're over the age of 35, you may not have heard of them -- until about a year ago.
In December 2023, Disney+ debuted the first season of "Percy Jackson and the Olympians," a buzzed-about adaptation of Riordan's book "The Lightning Thief" that...

There’s a new king of the Gods as Disney has just announced what actor will play Zeus in season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians!
It’s always difficult for a TV show to have to recast a major star. It’s even tougher when the reason is because the actor in the role passed away. Such is the challenge for the producers of Percy Jackson as the Disney+ series was a huge success with a great cast. Among them was acclaimed actor Lance Reddick as Zeus, the king of the Greek Gods.
Sadly, this turned out to be one of Reddick’s final roles, as the actor unexpectedly died in March 2023 at the age of 60. He had a few roles in other shows and films in the can before his passing and was to play a larger role in season 2 of Percy Jackson.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians has found its new Zeus in Courtney B. Vance. The two-time Emmy-winning actor replaces Lance Reddick as the sky god following The Wire alum’s death in March 2023. “I can’t tell you how excited I am to join the extraordinary cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians!” Vance said in a statement on Monday, November 25. “There are few moments in an actor’s career when you can honestly say that you’re about to board a series that has such a devoted fan base filled with characters beloved around the world and is based on a wildly successful book series. I know that stepping into this role of Zeus will be a memorable experience and I’ll be giving my brother, Lance Reddick, who left us way too soon, a heavenly hug.” Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 is currently filming and is set to premiere in 2025 on Disney+.

Recently, the realms of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, John Wick, and Resident Evil faced a head-on collision when the premature, tragic death of actor Lance Reddick sent the industry into a tailspin. Fans and former co-stars came together to express their collective grief and heartbreak.

Now, as the dust settles and the industry gets back in motion, projects that actively involve Reddick’s participation are stuck in a dilemma. Recasting the actor seems disrespectful of his memory and legacy and reproducing his scenes and dialogues through AI could lead to a mutiny.
However, the gears of the entertainment industry need to keep turning and Law & Order provided the necessary solution to Disney’s particular problem.

Zeus is the Greek god of the sky and the father of demigod Thalia Grace (recently announced cast member Tamara Smart). For my money, the most exciting thing in here is a look at the second and final season of Star Wars: Andor, about the early days of the Rebel Alliance. The first season thoroughly impressed Star Wars fans with its restraint and maturity, and I'm entirely willing to believe cast members when they say the second season will step things up. Andor season 2 premieres on Disney+ on April 22. Even closer in time, the new Star Wars series Skeleton Crew...

The second-to-last episode of “Agatha All Along” got 4.6 million views on its first day on Disney+, nearly 10% more than the 4.2 million views Episode 7 received in the same period.
Episode 9, which premiered the same night, had 3.9 million views on its first day. Disney calls the last two episodes a “two-part finale,” and while Episode 9 is slightly behind the previous two in views, it may catch up over the weekend.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians season 2 gets a new update from author Rick Riordan, who reveals how much filming has been completed. Based on Riordan's hit book series of the same name, the popular Disney+ fantasy series premiered last year, following young demigod Percy (Walker Scobell), Poseidon's son, as he embarks on an epic quest to recover Zeus' stolen lightning bolt. After season 1 became a success, it was confirmed that Percy Jackson & the Olympians season 2 would be moving forward.
During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Riordan is asked about the status of Percy Jackson & the Olympians season 2. The author, who created the show with Jonathan E. Steinberg, reveals that the sophomore outing is at about the "one-third mark" in terms of filming. Check out Riordan's full comment below:
Were not at the halfway point in shooting, but Id say were probably coming up on like the one-third mark.

Alexandra Daddario might have been known for her role in the Percy Jackson franchise. However, after breaking into the film industry, the actress broke away from her PG roles to tackle a character in the American drama series, True Detective. With the show focusing on detectives being forced to face dark secrets about themselves, the 38-year-old was tossed into the ring as a court reporter having an affair with a married detective, who was played by Woody Harrelson.

Daddario’s role was unlike any other she had ever portrayed. But her dip into explicit material in the world of television stunned fans. Although it was a lot to put on a young rising star, the actress admitted that one thing that helped her through the adult scenes was Harrelson.

The first episode of “Agatha All Along” hit 9.3 million views on Disney+ in its first seven days of streaming.
A spinoff of the 2021 Marvel limited series “WandaVision,” the series premiered on Sept. 18. Disney defines a view as the total amount of time watched divided by runtime. Therefore, the episode was watched for an approximate total of 6.5 million hours, when multiplying views by runtime.
The opening of “Agatha All Along” appears to be roughly on par with that of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” which in December 2023 debuted with 13.3 million views in six days, as well as “The Acolyte,” the June 2024 Star Wars series that hit 11.1 million views in five days. However, because Disney hasn’t provided statistics measured through a standardized period of time, it’s difficult to make conclusive comparisons. However, “Agatha” is definitively behind “Ahsoka,” the Star Wars series that premiered in August 2023 and hit a higher total...

Now that the Percy Jackson book series is being adapted to television, it's time for old and new fans to brush up on their knowledge of the novels. Thankfully, the order to read all seven of them is straightforward since their chronological order lines up with their release order. However, Riordan has written other book series set in the Percy Jackson universe, and that is when the timeline gets a bit tricky.
Riordan created the character of Percy Jackson when the author used to tell his son stories about Greek mythology. He turned his bedtime stories into a novel The Lightning Thief and the rest is history. Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which premiered in 2023, gives each book its own season. Hopefully, the Disney+ series continues to be successful enough to warrant more seasons, so that the entire series can come to life on-screen. Following the disaster that was the...

Percy Jackson & The Olympians is one of the best middle-grade fantasy book series of the 21st century, but that doesn't mean that every part of the novel has aged well. For the most part, Rick Riordan's books have aged better than most series, as they were created for the purpose of providing representation for children with learning differences like Adhd and dyslexia. Additionally, Riordan was part of the first wave of Greek myth retellings and sparked interest in the ancient tales for generations of young readers. What kids read as they're growing up has a significant impact on them.
So far, the TV series has improved upon some of the missteps of the books while staying true to the source material and bringing to life the aspects of the story that readers love.

We’ve long been in the midst of a reimagining of Greek myth — these can be conscious of the original setting of the stories of Hesiod and Homer, as is from Emily Wilson’s searing translation of “The Iliad,” as well as the somewhat less faithful raft of novels taking marginalized characters in Greek myth as their protagonists and the platforming perfection of “Hades.” But likewise, the jazz funeral that is “Hadestown,” the apotheosis of fanfic and webcomics that is “Lore Olympus,” and now, several different films and TV shows all play with the Greek gods using bits of our own contemporary context.
The latest entry in the pantheon, Charlie Covell’s “Kaos,” has a surface layer of Gen-z hedonism in its look and style — Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) in a tracksuit, throwing tantrums in a golden palace. But the idea of the Greek Gods as disappointing dads in Hawaiian shirts...

The Netflix algorithm is a presumably all-knowing yet unknowable piece of math that can make kings and tumble empires. It has allowed shows like "Arrested Development" and "Lucifer" to get a second chance at life after their original networks canceled them. The algorithm has made Netflix shows into huge worldwide phenomena, like "Squid Game" and "Stranger Things," but it has also made big productions disappear into the ether as no one knows when they get released, let alone watch them — like "The Irishman."
No one knows whether a show will be a hit or not, as even if one tops the charts upon its release, there is no guarantee that it will remain there and prove itself worthy of more episodes. Kaos is now streaming on Netflix, and Jeff Goldblum's new series is the perfect Percy Jackson replacement for viewers looking for something a bit more mature. Percy Jackson & the Olympians got a second screen adaptation in 2023, and the Disney+ series proved a huge improvement over the movies. Percy Jackson season 2 is confirmed and in the works, but it won't premiere on the streaming platform until sometime in 2025. In the interim, Percy Jackson fans might be looking for a similar series to watch.

Tantalus, a demigod king with a mean-spirited demeanor, will create challenges for Percy Jackson and his peers at Camp Half-Blood. Simons must walk a delicate line between nailing Tantalus' cruelty without making him into a cartoonish antagonist.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians has cast several second-season characters, including Tantalus an openly hostile demigod king who crops up at Camp Half-Blood for the duration of Rick Riordan's source material, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters. Tantalus is far from the only character whose casting has been revealed in recent weeks. During San Diego Comic-Con, Disney+ divulged that Daniel Diemer (The Half of It) will play Tyson, Percy Jackson's cyclops half-brother. Weeks later, the streamer confirmed some choice casting for Percy Jackson season 2's Gray Sisters.

ESPN is making a few cuts to its football roster: NFL analyst Robert Griffin III and host Sam Ponder have been let go by the network, The Athletic reports. The cuts were reportedly “made for financial reasons.”
Griffin, a former NFL quarterback who won the Heisman Trophy in college, had been with ESPN since 2021, appearing on the NFL pregame show Monday Night Countdown and as an analyst during college football games as well. Earlier this year, though, ESPN hired former player Jason Kelce to take Griffin’s spot on the Monday Night Countdown crew.

Season 2 of Percy Jackson & the Olympians promises to maintain the humor and positivity of the books, with new adventures and iconic moments. The show's creators, cast, and recent teasers suggest a continuation of the lighthearted tone and faithful adaptation of Rick Riordan's novels. While venturing into darker themes, such as the Sea of Monsters, the show is poised to deliver more laughs and mythological quests for fans.
When Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson & the Olympians books came out, I considered myself to be a little too old for them, but since I picked one up in a charity shop, I've been hooked, and I'm so glad that the TV show is honoring this great fiction. While the Percy Jackson & the Olympians season 1 ending satisfied me, I was wondering whether the show's second season would manage to maintain the same level of faithfulness to the source material, in...

The Gray Sisters' casting in Percy Jackson season 2 is exciting, as a truly comedic trio is set to bring the characters from Greek mythology to life. In Rick Riordan's novels, the Gray Sisters operate a cab service for demigods and other beings. In The Sea of Monsters, the Gray Sisters play crucial role in the very beginning of the story, setting the stage for high-stakes adventures for the demigods.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians' season 2 casting announcement has me worried but not for the reasons you might think. At D23, Disney's annual fan expo, Percy Jackson season 2 revealed its Gray Sisters casting, confirming that comedic powerhouses Sandra Bernhard (Roseanne), Kristen Schaal (Bob's Burgers), and Margaret Cho (Fire Island) will be playing the iconic trio in the Disney+ series' sophomore outing. I'm thrilled about this casting decision, which comes on the heels of Percy Jackson's confirmation that Daniel Diemer's Tyson,...
