Simon Carlson (Christopher Lee) and his fiancee Sarah Framsen (Jenny Hanley) go looking for Simon's younger brother Paul (Christopher Matthews) after he disappears while seeking shelter at Dracula's (Christopher Lee) castle.
Scars of Dracula is the fifth movie in Hammer Horror's Dracula series, preceded by Horror of Dracula (1958) (1958), The Brides of Dracula (1960) (1960), Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966) (1966), and Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970) (1970) and followed by Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972) (1972) and The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973) (1973). All of Hammer's Dracula movies are based on the character created by Irish novelist Bram Stoker in his 1897 novel Dracula. The screenplay for Scars of Dracula was written by British screenwriter Anthony Hinds.
Sarah stays with the priest (Michael Gwynn) while Simon returns to the castle and bribes Klove (Patrick Troughton) to help him. Klove shows him the window into Dracula's crypt and, armed with a broken table leg, Simon climbs down into it where he finds Dracula asleep in his coffin. Simon attempts to stake him, but Dracula's hypnotic eyes, even though closed, are too powerful, and Simon drops the stake and collapses on the floor. Meanwhile, that pesky bat has killed the priest and Sarah has fled to the castle in search of Simon. When Simon comes to, he sees that Dracula's coffin is empty and notices his dead brother impaled on a wall. Sarah has escaped to the castle ramparts, but Dracula pursues. In an attempt to help Sarah, Klove tosses a rope down to Simon who uses it to climb out of the crypt. He races to the ramparts, where the bat has ripped off Sarah's crucifix, and Dracula is inching toward her. Simon grabs an iron spike and tosses it at Dracula's abdomen, but Dracula pulls it out. As he raises the spike to toss it back at Simon, a lightning bolt strikes the spike, electrocuting Dracula. In the final scene, Dracula bursts into flames, tumbles over the rampart wall, and falls to the ground below.
