The gunfight where Elvin Jones plays his amazing drum solo was so poorly recorded that the legendary New Orleans session drummer Earl Palmer was called in to overdub the solo. Amazing that as intricate a solo as that was he was able to replicate it note for note.
Originally, Bob Dylan was asked to do the soundtrack to this film, being sent the script in 1968. Dylan was not impressed, telling Jann Wenner the following year, "I had a script awhile ago, that was called 'Zachariah and the Seven Cowboys' (laughs). That was some script. Every line in it was taken out of the Bible. And just thrown together." [PM]
